Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN LAURA KNEW
Michael met Rachel at a charity dinner two years after Laura’s death.
Rachel said she worked in nonprofit financial management.
She seemed patient with Ava.
She listened when Michael spoke about grief.
She said she admired how he had raised his daughter alone.
They married ten months later.
Michael believed the meeting had been accidental.
Laura’s note suggested otherwise.
Ruth Bennett was not Rachel’s relative.
Ruth Collins was Laura’s mother.
She lived in a retirement community near Boston.
Michael had not spoken to her in almost a year.
Their relationship became strained after his marriage.
Ruth had warned him that Rachel asked too many questions about Laura’s estate.
Michael accused Ruth of refusing to let him move forward.
Now he called her from the hospital.
She answered on the second ring.
“Is Ava safe?”
The question came before hello.
Michael gripped the phone.
“How did you know something happened?”
Ruth remained silent.
“Laura wrote Rachel’s name inside a journal.”
Ruth released a long breath.
“Where is Ava?”
“At the hospital.”
“What happened?”
“My wife locked her in a cold pantry.”
Ruth’s voice broke.
“I told Laura that woman would come back.”
Michael closed his eyes.
“Who is Rachel?”
Ruth explained that Laura had met Rachel twelve years earlier.
Rachel worked as an accounts assistant at a children’s medical foundation where Laura served as a legal consultant.
Laura discovered that money was missing from several family assistance funds.
The thefts were hidden through false reimbursement requests.
Rachel’s signature appeared on some documents.
Before Laura could report her, the foundation closed the investigation internally.
Rachel resigned.
“She blamed Laura,” Ruth said.
“She said Laura destroyed her career.”
“Why didn’t Laura tell me?”
“She tried.”
Michael remembered vague arguments near the end of Laura’s illness.
Laura said someone from her past had contacted her.
Michael was overwhelmed by medical bills and work.
He told her they would discuss it later.
Later never came.
Ruth continued.
“Laura believed Rachel was following her.”
“She began writing everything inside the blue journal.”
“Why would Rachel approach me after Laura died?”
“Because Laura discovered something bigger than stolen donations.”
“What?”
“A trust created for Ava.”
Michael looked through the glass at his sleeping daughter.
“What trust?”
“Laura never told you?”
“No.”
Ruth’s answer came quietly.
“Then the journal contains more than I realized.”
Officer Ruiz entered with another update.
Police had recovered footage from the pantry camera.
The account had not yet been deleted.
The first video showed Rachel installing the cooling unit.
The second showed her tying Ava’s wrists.
The third showed another person entering the pantry after midnight.
