Chapter 8 - THE COFFEE THAT WAS WAITING
Police searched Michael’s kitchen.
A sealed container of coffee grounds stood beside the machine.
Rachel had prepared it before leaving the house.
The grounds contained the same drug found in Laura’s injection vial.
The concentration was stronger.
A single cup could have caused heart failure.
Rachel and David planned to kill Michael after his scheduled return.
They would blame exhaustion from travel or an undiagnosed condition.
Rachel would become Ava’s guardian.
David would help move the trust overseas.
Ava’s disappearance would be explained as relocation after trauma.
Michael’s early return disrupted the timing.
He entered through the front door before Rachel could prepare the coffee.
He heard Ava before Rachel knew he was home.
Officer Ruiz issued arrest warrants for Rachel and David.
The old Collins warehouse named during the video call had been abandoned for five years.
Police surrounded it.
They found lights on inside but no people.
A laptop sat on the floor.
The screen displayed a countdown.
When it reached zero, an encrypted file began uploading.
David’s face appeared in a prerecorded message.
“If Michael has involved the police, every file connecting Collins Freight to Ava’s trust will be released publicly.”
Michael looked at Officer Ruiz.
“Why would he threaten to release evidence against himself?”
The answer appeared on the next screen.
The records had been altered to make Michael appear responsible.
David had used Michael’s electronic signature on transfers.
He had inserted Michael’s name into authorization logs.
If released without context, the files would make Michael look like the person who stole from his daughter.
The upload went to news organizations, federal regulators, and company investors.
Within an hour, reporters surrounded the hospital.
Collins Freight shares began falling.
Board members demanded Michael resign.
Rachel released a statement through an anonymous attorney.
She claimed Michael abused Ava.
She said the pantry was built by Michael.
She accused him of stealing the trust and blaming her when the child discovered it.
A short edited video appeared online.
It showed Michael shouting at Rachel in the kitchen months earlier.
It did not show Rachel striking Ava’s schoolbooks from the table before the argument.
The lie spread faster than the evidence.
Michael’s attorney advised silence.
Ruth disagreed.
“Laura remained quiet because she wanted more proof.”
“Look where that left her.”
Michael released the unedited pantry footage to police and child-protection authorities.
He refused to publish Ava’s suffering publicly.
Instead, he made a statement.
“My daughter was harmed.”
“I will answer every financial question.”
“But I will not turn her worst night into entertainment to protect my reputation.”
The board removed him temporarily.
David became acting chief executive through an emergency vote conducted remotely.
Michael stared at the announcement.
