Several construction projects had been approved despite serious safety defects.
One apartment complex experienced a balcony collapse six years earlier.
A woman was permanently injured.
Gerald’s company blamed a subcontractor.
The ledger showed Gerald approved cheaper materials and paid an inspector to remain silent.
Travis delivered several payments.
Patricia managed the hidden account.
Vanessa entered false invoices through the medical office where she worked.
The family system extended far beyond the house.
Everyone had a role.
Gerald commanded.
Patricia protected.
Travis carried out orders.
Vanessa made the paperwork appear ordinary.
I had escaped before they assigned mine.
That was why they resented me.
Not because I left.
Because leaving proved their rules were not unavoidable.
The district attorney created a special investigative team.
Because of my former role as a prosecutor, I recused myself from all legal strategy involving the old corruption cases.
I remained a witness and Lily’s mother.

The judge separated the proceedings.
Lily’s trial would come first.
At the hospital, Lily began physical therapy.
