Chapter 14 - The Open Door

James checked every room while I stayed with Lily.
Nothing had been stolen.
The alarm system had been disabled through the exterior utility box.
A muddy footprint marked the laundry-room floor.
On the kitchen table lay an old photograph.
It showed me at seventeen with bruises across my back.
Someone had written beneath it.
YOU WERE ALWAYS THE DANGEROUS ONE.
Police arrived within minutes.
Detective Ruiz recognized the photograph.
It came from Caroline’s original evidence box.
One image had disappeared after the attempted attack at her motel.
The former construction worker had passed it to someone else.
That person had entered our home.
Gerald remained in custody.
Patricia remained in custody.
Travis and Vanessa were being monitored.
Ruiz checked the old family-business records.
Gerald’s closest friend, Howard Mills, had not appeared in court for three days.
Howard had attended the birthday party.
He stood near the grill during the assault.
His first police statement claimed he saw nothing.
Security footage showed him watching through the glass door.
Howard also owned the house two streets from ours.
Police found his truck abandoned near the interstate.
Inside was a notebook containing our schedules.
Lily’s therapy appointments.
James’s work hours.
My travel route to court.
The final page contained a plan to remove Lily from our custody temporarily.
Howard believed that if Lily disappeared before testifying by recorded deposition, the case would collapse.
He did not understand that Lily was no longer required to appear.
Her hospital interview had already been admitted.
Ruiz placed officers outside our house.
The trial paused for one day.
Gerald denied knowing anything about Howard’s plan.
A jail recording proved otherwise.
Gerald had spoken to Howard using coded language.
Move the small equipment before inspection.
The prosecution translated the phrase using Hutchinson Construction records.
Small equipment meant children.
Inspection meant court.
The judge revoked Gerald’s phone privileges.
Howard remained missing.
Then James remembered something.
During the party, Howard had offered to take Lily and her cousins to see his new hunting cabin.
No one accepted.
The cabin was not listed under his name.
Travis knew where it was.
He gave police the coordinates.
Officers entered before sunrise.
May you like
Howard was inside.
So were three empty child-sized beds, restraints, food, and forged custody paperwork bearing my signature.
