Chapter 10 - Vanessa Breaks
Vanessa was arrested for violating the protective order and attempting illegal surveillance.
She claimed she did not know the device was inside the rabbit.
Store security footage showed her opening the seam in her car before entering the hospital.
Her attorney advised her to cooperate.
For the first time in her life, Vanessa faced a choice without Gerald standing beside her.
She requested an interview with prosecutors.
Her confession lasted six hours.
Gerald had hit her since she was five.
Patricia told her pain was the price of belonging.
When Vanessa became a mother, Gerald insisted on disciplining her daughter.
Vanessa allowed it because resisting him felt more dangerous than sacrificing the child.
She cried while saying it.
I believed her pain.
I did not excuse her choices.
Vanessa disclosed that Gerald kept a list of children he considered disrespectful.
Lily’s name had been added after her second birthday.
Her offenses included refusing a kiss, asking Gerald not to shout, and taking a toy away from Travis’s boys.
The birthday party was selected as the day Gerald would correct her because witnesses from his social circle would normalize it.
He believed no one would challenge him publicly.
Vanessa also admitted Patricia had instructed everyone to describe Lily’s fall as accidental.
Before the ambulance arrived, Patricia whispered to Travis.
Say Rebecca pushed past Dad and knocked the child down.
That lie failed because the guests recorded everything.
Vanessa agreed to testify.
When Gerald learned, he disowned her through his attorney.
Patricia sent a message from jail.
Your father gave you everything.
Vanessa answered through her lawyer.
He gave me fear and called it family.
Travis also began cooperating.
Not because he had changed.
Because he realized Vanessa’s testimony would leave him alone with the blame.
He identified more recordings from the correction room.
He confirmed Gerald pressured local police after my teenage incident.
He admitted hiding Lily’s water cup would have been impossible without Patricia’s instructions.
The prosecution now had witnesses, video, audio, medical records, and admissions from two of Gerald’s children.
Yet the defense continued.
They hired an expert who claimed Gerald’s belt strike had not caused the skull fracture.
According to him, the slick kitchen tile was solely responsible.
Dr. Chen read the report.
