Chapter 9 - BENEATH CROSS MEMORIAL

The abandoned subway platform smelled of rust and standing water.

Emma walked beside Adrian.

Olivia followed with Marcus.

Two loyal guards covered the rear.

The brass music-box cylinder fit into an old control panel beneath the platform sign.

A hidden door opened.

White emergency lights activated one by one.

The passage beyond was cleaner than the tunnel.

Steel walls reflected their movements.

Cameras rotated toward them.

A recorded voice spoke.

“Custodian key recognized.”

“Secondary heir authorization required.”

Emma placed her thumb against the scanner.

A needle pricked her skin.

The door unlocked.

Adrian stared at the blood on her thumb.

“Julian needed you for this.”

“Yes.”

“He could not use a sample.”

“No.”

“The system requires a live neurological response.”

Olivia looked at Emma.

“How do you know?”

“My mother helped design biometric security for medical laboratories.”

“She never told me she worked for Atlas.”

The tunnel ended at a circular chamber beneath the hospital.

Screens covered the walls.

Maps displayed power grids, water systems, emergency networks, and transportation routes.

Atlas was not simply a vault.

It was a command center.

A warning flashed across the central screen.

UNAUTHORIZED SUCCESSION ATTEMPT.

Adrian approached.

A second message appeared.

PRIMARY HEIR OLIVIA CROSS.

CUSTODIAN HEIR EMMA REED.

EMERGENCY CHALLENGE ACTIVE.

Olivia placed her palm against a console.

The system scanned her.

A red warning appeared.

BIOLOGICAL AUTHORIZATION INCOMPLETE.

Adrian frowned.

“She is Theodore’s daughter.”

Emma looked at Olivia.

Olivia looked back.

Neither spoke.

Marcus checked the doors.

“Somebody is coming.”

Dr. Elias Grant entered from the opposite corridor.

He held a gun.

Celeste staggered beside him.

Her wrists were bound.

Behind them, two men pushed Henry Reed in a wheelchair.

Emma ran toward him.

Dr. Grant raised the weapon.

“Stop.”

Henry lifted his head.

His face was bruised.

“Emma.”

She stopped.

Dr. Grant looked toward the brass cylinder.

“Place the custodian key on the central console.”

Emma did not move.

“Where is Julian?”

“Completing the succession transfer.”

“You poisoned my mother.”

Dr. Grant’s face revealed nothing.

“She was already dying.”

“That is what you wrote.”

“She carried information that would have destroyed Theodore and Samuel.”

“So you killed her?”

“I slowed her enough for Julian to recover what he needed.”

Adrian aimed his weapon.

“You will not leave this chamber.”

Dr. Grant smiled.

“You still think this building belongs to you.”

The lights changed from white to red.

Hospital security officers entered behind them.

Their guns pointed toward Adrian.

Julian walked into the chamber wearing a clean tuxedo jacket.

He had changed since the elevator corridor.

Not a drop of blood remained on him.

“Thank you for bringing the key,” he said.

Emma looked at Henry.

“Let him go.”

“After the transfer.”

Olivia stepped toward the console.

“The system rejected my authorization.”

Julian looked at her with satisfaction.

“Because you are not Theodore’s biological daughter.”

Adrian turned toward his sister.

Olivia’s face became empty.

Julian continued.

“Theodore adopted you after Gabriel died.”

“He never told Adrian.”

“He never told you.”

“Atlas will not pass to an adopted heir without the custodian’s override.”

Emma understood.

Julian needed her to authorize Olivia.

Then he planned to control Olivia through the evidence surrounding her adoption.

“What happens if I refuse?” Emma asked.

Julian looked at Henry.

May you like

Dr. Grant placed the syringe against his neck.

“Then your father dies first.”
