Theodore Cross’s second will was opened in federal court three weeks later.
News networks broadcast the hearing worldwide.
Cross Meridian stock fell sharply.
Board members resigned.
Three hospital executives were arrested.
The company faced investigations into medical fraud, illegal surveillance, and the manipulation of patient records.
Adrian sat at one table with Olivia.
Emma sat beside an independent attorney.
Henry watched from the gallery.
Celeste attended under witness protection.
Her testimony connected Vanessa and Julian to the poisoned champagne.
The court verified the will.
Atlas transferred legally to a nonprofit trust controlled jointly by Emma and Olivia.
Neither woman could sell it.
Neither could use it for private commercial advantage.
Every emergency activation required approval from three independent public-interest boards.
Theodore had not created a secret empire for his children.
He had created a system designed to survive them.
Cross Meridian remained under Adrian’s control.
But the will imposed conditions.
He had to separate the hospital network from the family company.
He had to release decades of internal records.
He had to fund compensation for every patient harmed by Dr. Grant’s concealed experiments.
Adrian accepted without argument.
The judge looked at him.
“Do you understand that complying may cost you control of the company?”
“Yes.”
“Do you intend to challenge the will?”
“No.”
The courtroom murmured.
Adrian continued.
“My father hid too much.”
“Julian survived inside those secrets.”
“I will not protect the company by repeating the same mistake.”
After the hearing, reporters surrounded Emma.
“How does it feel to inherit infrastructure worth billions?”
“Were you romantically involved with Adrian Cross?”
“Did you plan the wedding exposure?”
“Will you resign from catering?”
Emma stopped at the courthouse steps.
“I did not expose the wedding because I expected an inheritance.”
“I saw a woman trying to frame me.”
“I saw a man standing silently while it happened.”
“And I saw evidence that people intended to kill him.”
She looked toward Adrian.
“He did not save me.”
“The recording did.”
“Then witnesses finally chose to speak.”
Adrian accepted the criticism.
He did not interrupt.
A reporter asked whether Emma forgave him.
“That is not a business question,” she said.
“It is not a public question either.”
Inside the courthouse, Vanessa accepted a plea agreement.
She pleaded guilty to attempted murder, conspiracy, kidnapping, and fraud.
Her attorney argued that Julian manipulated her.
The prosecutor agreed that he had.
Then she reminded the court that manipulation did not erase Vanessa’s choices.
Vanessa received thirty-one years.
Dr. Grant received life after investigators connected him to Evelyn Reed’s poisoning and six other suspicious patient deaths.
Celeste received a reduced sentence for cooperation.
She had participated in the setup.
But she also preserved messages, testified, and helped stop Dr. Grant inside the Atlas chamber.
Julian refused every plea offer.
He demanded a trial.
He insisted he could still prove Adrian’s family had stolen Atlas from the Mercers.
Then investigators opened the last file on the flash drive.
It contained Samuel Mercer’s recorded confession.
Samuel admitted ordering Gabriel Mercer’s murder.
He admitted experimenting on Evelyn.
He admitted placing Julian near Adrian.
Julian listened to his father’s voice in the interrogation room.
