Chapter 11 - THE CHOICE

Julian pointed his gun at Emma.

“Select Olivia.”

Emma kept her hand on the scanner.

“What happens if I select myself?”

“You die before confirmation.”

“You still need a living custodian.”

“Only until the transfer completes.”

Adrian moved slightly to the right.

Two security officers tracked him.

Marcus watched the guards.

Olivia studied the control panel.

A small green light blinked beneath the Atlas logo.

She recognized it as an emergency recording indicator.

Everything in the chamber was being archived.

Julian did not know.

Emma looked at Henry.

Her father’s eyes were open.

He moved his right hand slowly across the wheelchair arm.

Three taps.

Pause.

Two taps.

It was a code they used when his speech failed after the stroke.

Three meant wait.

Two meant trust.

Emma did not understand who he wanted her to trust.

Then Henry looked toward Celeste.

Celeste had been standing weakly beside Dr. Grant.

Her hands were tied in front.

She moved one finger toward the empty injector hidden inside her sleeve.

Dr. Grant believed she was too sick to resist.

Julian became impatient.

“Choose.”

Emma selected her own name.

Julian fired.

Adrian threw himself into her.

The bullet struck the console.

Celeste drove the injector into Dr. Grant’s neck.

He screamed.

Marcus shot the nearest corrupt guard.

Olivia dropped behind the command desk.

Gunfire erupted.

Henry rolled his wheelchair into Dr. Grant’s legs.

The doctor fell.

Emma crawled toward her father.

Adrian fired at Julian.

Julian disappeared behind a server column.

The Atlas system continued speaking calmly.

SUCCESSOR EMMA REED SELECTED.

SECONDARY CONFIRMATION REQUIRED.

Emma reached Henry.

“Are you hurt?”

He shook his head.

Celeste collapsed beside them.

“What did you inject him with?” Emma asked.

“The remaining sedative.”

Dr. Grant tried to rise.

His arms failed.

Marcus disarmed him.

Olivia reached the secondary console.

“What confirmation does the system need?”

A message appeared.

THE SUCCESSOR MUST IDENTIFY THE PURPOSE OF ATLAS.

Julian laughed from behind the column.

“You cannot answer.”

“Evelyn never told you.”

Emma looked at the maps.

Theodore had described power grids.

Hospitals.

Water.

Communications.

Julian believed Atlas existed to control them.

Theodore believed it should survive compromised leadership.

Her mother had spent her life hiding the key.

Emma remembered childhood nights without electricity.

Evelyn would light candles and say that systems mattered only because people did.

Emma entered the answer.

TO KEEP PEOPLE ALIVE WHEN POWER FAILS THEM.

The system paused.

Then the central screen turned green.

SUCCESSION CONFIRMED.

EMMA REED.

ATLAS CUSTODIAN.

Julian stepped from behind the column.

His calm had vanished.

“You are a waitress.”

Emma stood.

“No.”

“I was working as one.”

He aimed at her.

Adrian raised his weapon.

Before either man fired, every door in the chamber locked.

The Atlas voice spoke.

LETHAL THREAT DETECTED.

EMERGENCY CONTAINMENT ACTIVE.

Steel barriers descended between Julian and the others.

He fired repeatedly.

The bullets struck reinforced glass.

Emma stared at him through the barrier.

May you like

Julian had spent decades positioning himself beside power.

Now the system had recognized him as the danger.
