Chapter 1 - THE FLASH DRIVE

“This contains the devastating truth about why they desperately needed you completely out of the picture.”

Julian Mercer stood beside the open elevator shaft with the encrypted flash drive pinched between two fingers.

His tuxedo jacket was torn at the shoulder.

Blood ran from a cut above his eyebrow.

Yet the smile on his face remained cold and confident.

Across the west-wing corridor, Adrian Cross stared at the man he had trusted for twenty-three years.

Julian had been his college roommate.

His first business partner.

His best man.

The godfather Adrian had already chosen for the children he expected to have with Vanessa.

Now three armed security guards formed a half circle around him.

“Put it down,” Adrian ordered.

Julian glanced into the dark elevator shaft behind him.

“There is nowhere to put it down safely.”

Adrian’s security chief, Marcus Kane, moved closer.

“Do not test me.”

Julian laughed softly.

“You have no idea what you are protecting.”

In the grand ballroom behind them, more than four hundred wedding guests remained trapped behind locked doors.

The enormous projection screen still displayed the recovered footage.

Vanessa Sterling could be seen passing a glass vial to her maid of honor, Celeste Warren.

A second recording showed Julian entering the catering kitchen and contaminating the champagne intended for Adrian.

At the center of the ballroom, Emma Reed stood in a ripped waitress uniform.

Her cheek was red where Vanessa had struck her.

Two guards remained beside her, not to arrest her now, but to protect her from the family that had nearly destroyed her.

Adrian looked toward Emma.

She was the only reason the footage existed.

She had noticed a tiny camera hidden behind the ballroom clock.

She had also noticed that the recording system had been disconnected from the estate network only twenty minutes before the champagne was served.

Instead of obeying Vanessa’s demand to leave the room, Emma had quietly activated the hotel’s emergency fire protocol.

That protocol automatically backed up every security feed to an off-site server.

Julian had not known.

Neither had Vanessa.

Adrian returned his attention to the flash drive.

“What is on it?”

Julian’s smile widened.

“The real reason Vanessa agreed to marry you.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“She wanted my company.”

“No.”

“She wanted what is buried beneath it.”

The security guards exchanged confused looks.

Adrian did not.

Cross Meridian Holdings controlled shipping ports, hospitals, data centers, and energy contracts across three continents.

Its market value exceeded sixty billion dollars.

Nothing could be buried beneath something that large without Adrian knowing.

At least, that was what he had believed.

Julian raised the drive.

“Your father left a second will.”

Adrian became completely still.

His father, Theodore Cross, had died eleven years earlier in what police called a private plane accident.

Adrian inherited the company.

Julian stood beside him at the funeral.

Vanessa entered Adrian’s life five years later.

“You are lying,” Adrian said.

Julian shrugged.

“Then let me fall.”

He leaned backward over the elevator shaft.

Marcus lunged.

Julian dropped the flash drive.

Emma ran from the ballroom.

She slid across the polished floor and caught it inches before it vanished into the darkness.

At the same moment, Marcus grabbed Julian’s jacket.

The fabric ripped.

Julian fell halfway into the shaft.

For several seconds, his legs swung over empty space.

Then two guards pulled him back.

He hit the floor hard.

Emma closed her fist around the flash drive.

Julian looked at her with pure hatred.

“You should have stayed invisible.”

Emma stood.

“So should the truth?”

Adrian approached her.

“Give it to me.”

She looked at the man who had remained silent while his bride accused her.

The man who had watched security tear her uniform.

The man who had not spoken until the screen proved she was innocent.

“No,” Emma said.

The corridor fell silent.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“That drive belongs to my family.”

“It was used as part of a plan to murder you and frame me.”

“That makes it evidence.”

Marcus nodded.

“She is right.”

Adrian looked at his security chief.

Marcus continued.

“We lock down the property.”

“We bring in independent investigators.”

“Nobody touches the drive until it is copied.”

From inside the ballroom, a woman screamed.

Everyone turned.

Celeste Warren had collapsed beside the wedding table.

White foam covered her lips.

Vanessa knelt beside her, pretending to be terrified.

Emma looked down at the flash drive.

May you like

Then she looked at Adrian.

“The champagne was not the only thing poisoned.”
