Chapter 9 - THE TRUCK THAT REMEMBERED

The maintenance tunnel opened beneath Atlas Vehicle Seven.

Lauren’s SUV had been struck by Vehicle Seven.

The truck remained in the facility as a sealed test artifact.

Samuel kept it because its internal system contained the original remote-command log.

Destroying the truck would have raised questions.

Instead, he locked it away.

Annie emerged beneath the chassis.

Agent Shaw’s team positioned themselves behind equipment barriers.

Nolan accessed the vehicle through a maintenance port.

The internal camera activated.

Footage from the night of Lauren’s crash appeared.

Rain covered the windshield.

Samuel’s voice issued the command.

CROSS MEDIAN.

COLLISION TARGET LOCKED.

Then another voice interrupted.

Hannah.

“There are children in the vehicle.”

Samuel answered.

“They are acceptable loss.”

Kevin listened from across the hangar through a hidden earpiece.

His grief transformed.

For fourteen months, he had imagined Lauren’s final moments as random chaos.

Now he knew someone watched his family through a camera and chose to continue.

Samuel opened the server case.

He realized it was not the original.

His expression changed.

“Where is it?”

“With federal investigators.”

Vale tightened his hold on Jordan.

Samuel looked toward the trucks.

Then he pressed a remote.

Vehicle Seven’s engine started.

The hangar doors opened.

The truck accelerated toward Kevin.

He jumped behind a support column.

Vehicle Seven turned.

Its sensors tracked him.

Samuel had converted the testing facility into a weapon.

Agent Shaw ordered her team forward.

Gunfire erupted.

Vale dragged Jordan and Justin toward the upper control room.

Annie climbed from beneath the truck.

Jordan saw her.

“Miss Annie.”

Vale turned.

She threw a metal wrench.

It struck his hand.

The syringe fell.

Jordan kicked his shin.

Justin remained unconscious on the floor.

Annie pulled both boys behind the control desk.

Vale drew a pistol.

Before he could fire, Hannah entered through the side door with her wounded arm in a sling.

She shot Vale in the leg.

He collapsed.

“You,” he whispered.

Hannah stared at the man who had shaped her childhood.

“You said pain made memory stronger.”

She kicked the gun away.

“I remember everything.”

Below them, Vehicle Seven cornered Kevin against the wall.

Nolan entered the control system.

The truck rejected shutdown commands.

Lauren had installed an emergency phrase known only to the safety director.

Kevin remembered a bedtime game she played with the twins.

When machines forget people, people must remember.

He shouted the phrase toward the truck’s external microphone.

“People come first.”

The vehicle stopped inches from his body.

Its engine shut down.

Samuel ran toward the rear exit.

Agent Shaw blocked him.

He held up the remote connected to the other Atlas trucks.

“If I release this, every vehicle leaves the facility.”

Nolan checked the network.

Twelve trucks were programmed to enter public roads.

Each carried collision targets.

Journalists.

Regulators.

Federal witnesses.

Samuel smiled.

“You cannot save all of them.”

Kevin looked toward the control room.

Annie held Jordan.

Hannah supported Justin.

His sons were alive.

For the first time, Kevin did not try to control everything alone.

“Nolan.”

“Already working.”

“Elena.”

“Road units alerted.”

“Annie.”

She looked down.

“Get my sons out.”

Kevin turned back to Samuel.

“You built this company from my name.”

Samuel laughed.

“I built it while you played inventor.”

Kevin stepped closer.

“Then watch us dismantle it.”

Nolan sent Lauren’s emergency phrase through the entire Atlas network.

One by one, the engines stopped.

Samuel released the remote.

May you like

Nothing happened.

Agent Shaw placed him in handcuffs.
