Chapter 10 - THE FIVE NANNIES
After the rescue, investigators reopened the records of all five nannies.
The first nanny, Elise Monroe, had not resigned voluntarily.
She reported that Jordan described a woman standing beside the crash.
Dr. Vale told Kevin she lacked experience.
Samuel paid her to accept a severance agreement.
When she later tried to contact Kevin, Morrison security blocked her calls.
The second nanny, Rebecca Lane, found a hidden microphone inside the twins’ playroom.
She removed it.
Two days later, someone planted medication inside her handbag.
She was fired for suspected drug use.
The third nanny, Helen Brooks, documented bruises on Justin’s arm after a session with Dr. Vale.
Vale claimed Justin caused them himself.
Helen refused to change her report.
Her agency suddenly revoked its recommendation.
The fourth nanny, Sandra Pierce, noticed Hannah entering the mansion at night.
Sandra believed she was Lauren.
Hannah used a blonde wig and Lauren’s old coat.
The sight frightened the twins and confused their memories.
When Sandra questioned her, Samuel threatened Sandra’s immigration status.
She left the country.
The fifth nanny was Hannah using Claire’s identity.
Kevin had not fired five women because none understood his sons.
Three had discovered pieces of the conspiracy.
One had been forced away.
The last had been placed there to finish breaking the children.
Kevin sat inside the federal interview center listening to each testimony.
Shame entered slowly.
He had believed himself decisive.
He had been managed.
Every recommendation came from Vale.
Every complaint was filtered through Samuel.
Every woman was dismissed before Kevin asked why her story differed from theirs.
Annie sat beside him.
“You cannot change what you missed.”
“I can stop pretending I missed it accidentally.”
“You were grieving.”
“I was also arrogant.”
He looked toward the observation room, where the twins played with blocks.
“I believed expertise always arrived wearing credentials.”
Annie smiled slightly.
“Credentials matter.”
“They just do not replace listening.”
Kevin contacted every former nanny.
He apologized.
Elise accepted.
Rebecca Lane did not.
Helen asked him to fund legal services for caregivers retaliated against by wealthy employers.
Sandra refused direct contact but allowed her testimony to be used.
Kevin respected every answer.
Hannah entered federal custody.
Her cooperation exposed Vale’s clinics and Samuel’s private operations.
She faced charges for child abuse, identity fraud, kidnapping, and conspiracy.
Before her transfer, she asked to see Jordan and Justin.
Kevin refused.
Then Jordan asked whether the “sad Claire” was going to prison.
Kevin explained carefully that Hannah had hurt them and had also been hurt by adults when she was young.
Jordan looked confused.
“Can both be true?”
“Yes.”
“Do we have to forgive her?”
“No.”
Justin held Kevin’s hand.
“Will she come back?”
“No.”
The answer allowed both boys to breathe.
Dr. Vale survived his gunshot wound.
His clinic records revealed dozens of coerced patients.
He had altered memories through medication, suggestion, and isolation.
Samuel used him to create unreliable witnesses.
Nolan was one of them.
Hannah was another.
The twins had been his youngest targets.
Kevin stood outside Vale’s hospital room under federal guard.
He wanted to enter.
He wanted the doctor to see the father he had failed to control.
Annie stopped beside him.
“What would you say?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then do not give him another conversation to live inside your head.”
