Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN AT THE GATE

Kevin ordered Annie not to open the door.
He called mansion security and drove home.
Claire stood outside the main gate wearing a dark raincoat.
She looked thinner than Kevin remembered.
A healing bruise marked her jaw.
Two guards kept their weapons lowered but visible.
When Kevin stepped from the car, Claire lifted both hands.
“I came to warn you.”
“You told my sons they killed their mother.”
Her face changed.
“I never said that.”
“They used your name.”
“Then someone used my name.”
Kevin stared.
Claire reached slowly into her coat and removed a passport.
The photograph matched the nanny he hired.
The name did not.
CLAIRE DAVENPORT.
The woman at the gate was the real Claire.
Her university records were genuine.
She had worked for a senator’s family.
She had never entered the Morrison mansion.
“Someone stole my identity six months ago,” she said.
“I reported it.”
“The agency told me they would handle it.”
“Then Dr. Vale called yesterday.”
“He said children were accusing me of abuse.”
“Why did he call you?”
“He wanted me to sign a confidentiality agreement.”
“I refused.”
She showed Kevin the bruise.
“Two men entered my apartment last night.”
“They took my computer.”
“I escaped through the fire stairs.”
Kevin opened the gate.
Claire entered under guard.
Annie watched from the foyer.
The twins remained upstairs.
The real Claire looked at Annie.
“You found them sleeping?”
Annie nodded.
Claire’s eyes filled.
“I read the intake notes Dr. Vale prepared.”
“He described the boys as oppositional and emotionally manipulative.”
“They are five.”
“Yes.”
“That language allows adults to ignore fear.”
Kevin looked toward the staircase.
“Who impersonated you?”
Claire placed a photograph on the foyer table.
The woman had auburn hair and green eyes.
She resembled Claire enough to pass in photographs.
Her real name was Hannah Cross.
Samuel Cross’s daughter.
Kevin remembered her as a teenager.
She attended company holidays.
After college, she disappeared from public life.
Samuel said she moved to Europe.
Hannah had studied theater.
She also trained as a behavioral technician under Dr. Vale.
“She entered my house to control the boys,” Kevin said.
Claire nodded.
“And to learn what they remembered.”
Kevin’s chest tightened.
“What could they remember?”
“The crash.”
The twins had been awake before the SUV rolled.
Jordan once told the second nanny that a man stood beside the truck after the collision.
Justin described a woman opening the rear door and touching Lauren’s neck.
Dr. Vale labeled the memories dream contamination.
The false Claire had been placed in the house to replace those memories with guilt.
If the boys believed they caused the crash, they would stop describing the people they saw.
Annie stepped toward Kevin.
“Jordan said there was a man with silver shoes.”
Kevin remembered Samuel Cross at Lauren’s funeral.
He wore silver-gray dress shoes.
“He was at the crash?”
Claire looked toward the guards.
“Samuel supervised the cleanup.”
Kevin called Nolan.
He ordered him to preserve every Atlas record and alert federal investigators.
Nolan did not answer.
Kevin called again.
Nothing.
Then the mansion television activated.
A live security feed showed Morrison Dynamics headquarters.

Smoke poured from the executive floors.
The data center was burning.
