Chapter 8 - THE EMPTY BED

Kevin reached the mansion to find the front door open.
One guard lay unconscious near the security desk.
Patricia Sloan sat on the foyer floor with blood at her temple.
The twins were gone.
Their beds remained warm.
Jordan’s stuffed lion lay near the service stairs.
Justin’s shoes were missing.
Samuel had taken them alive.
That meant he needed something.
Kevin called every board member.
No one answered.
Then the library television activated.
Samuel Cross appeared inside Morrison Dynamics’ private testing facility.
Jordan and Justin sat behind him.
Their wrists were not tied.
That frightened Kevin more.
Samuel had arranged the room to look safe.
“Kevin,” he said.
“You have allowed grief to distort your judgment.”
“Let my sons go.”
“They are comfortable.”
“Let me speak to them.”
Samuel smiled.
“You will see them after the Atlas server is returned.”
“The data has already reached federal investigators.”
“Copies can be discredited.”
“The original cannot.”
Kevin looked toward Nolan.
Nolan shook his head.
The isolated server contained hardware signatures proving the files came directly from the company.
Samuel needed it destroyed.
“What happens if I refuse?” Kevin asked.
“The twins begin treatment with Dr. Vale.”
Jordan heard the name.
His face changed.
Justin started crying.
Kevin’s hands shook.
“Samuel.”
“You know what Marcus can do to memory.”
“Bring the server to the Northline test facility.”
“Come alone.”
The screen turned black.
Federal Agent Elena Shaw arrived with a tactical team.
She had been Lauren’s secret contact.
Lauren never reached her on the night of the crash.
Elena had spent fourteen months building a case with insufficient evidence.
Now the Atlas files gave her warrants.
“We will enter the facility,” she said.
“Samuel expects that.”
“He will be monitoring the roads.”
“Then we use the old freight tunnel.”
Kevin looked toward Annie.
Again, she knew the building differently.
Northline had once been a textile factory.
Annie’s aunt worked there before it closed.
A sealed maintenance tunnel connected the boiler house to the testing hangar.
“I can guide them,” Annie said.
“No.”
Kevin’s answer came instantly.
She held his gaze.
“Your sons trust me.”
“That is exactly why you cannot risk your life.”
“They trusted five nannies who failed them.”
“They trusted me because I stayed.”
“If they wake inside that facility, hearing my voice may matter.”
Kevin wanted to order her away.
He remembered the open window.
The quiet bedroom.
Lauren’s words.
Children wake because they want to know someone noticed.
Annie had noticed.
He nodded.
The operation began after midnight.
Nolan carried a false server.
Agent Shaw’s team entered through the freight tunnel.
Kevin approached the main gate alone with the real hardware inside a case.
Samuel met him in the testing hangar.
Autonomous trucks lined the floor.
Dr. Vale stood beside the twins.
Jordan saw Kevin and tried to run.
Vale caught his shoulder.
Kevin stopped moving.
“Let them go.”
Samuel gestured toward the case.
“Place it on the floor.”
Kevin obeyed.
Vale injected something into Justin’s arm.
The child’s body softened.
Kevin lunged.
Samuel’s guards raised weapons.
“One more step and Marcus gives the other boy twice the dose.”
Kevin froze.

From beneath the hangar floor, Annie heard Justin cry.
She began crawling faster.
