Chapter 5: Home, At Last

Six months later, the old farmhouse was gone.

The sergeant had sold it without ever looking back.

He and Emily started over in a quiet lakeside town hundreds of miles away.

Therapy became part of their weekly routine.

Some nights Emily still woke from nightmares, convinced she was trapped behind metal bars.

Each time, her father would sit beside her bed until sunrise if necessary.

He never complained.

He never left.

One Saturday morning, they built something together in the backyard.

Not a cage.

A treehouse.

Emily hammered the last nail into place before stepping back proudly.

"What should we call it?" she asked.

The sergeant smiled.

She hadn't smiled like that in months.

He looked at the small wooden house standing freely among the branches.

"Freedom."

Emily grinned.

"I like that."

She climbed inside and leaned over the railing.

"Dad?"

"Yeah?"

"You came back."

He felt tears threaten to fall.

"I always will."

Years later, Emily would barely remember the cage.

She would remember something else instead—

The moment her father came home...

Broke open the door that held her prisoner...

May you like

And spent the rest of his life making sure she never felt trapped again.

The End.
