Chapter 1: Behind the Rusted Bars

The sergeant's boots pounded across the overgrown yard so hard that loose gravel sprayed behind him.

"Emily!"

His duffel bag slipped from his shoulder and landed with a heavy thud, forgotten.

The little girl inside the rusted dog cage looked up slowly, shielding her eyes from the afternoon sun. For a heartbeat, neither of them moved. They simply stared, trying to believe the impossible.

"Daddy?"

Her voice cracked.

The single word shattered whatever discipline years in the Army had built inside him.

He dropped to his knees beside the cage, wrapping both hands around the cold metal bars. His fingers trembled so violently they could barely find the latch.

The lock wasn't even secured with a real padlock.

Just an old chain tied together with a cheap combination lock.

Three desperate pulls later, the chain snapped free.

Emily practically fell into his arms.

She weighed far less than he remembered.

Far too light.

He held her against his chest while she buried her face in his dusty uniform, clinging to him as though letting go meant she'd disappear again.

"I'm here," he whispered repeatedly.

"I'm home now."

For several minutes, neither of them spoke.

Only when her breathing finally slowed did he gently brush tangled strands of blonde hair away from her face.

Fresh bruises marked her wrists.

There were mosquito bites covering her legs.

And her lips were dry enough to crack.

His stomach twisted.

"What happened?"

Emily hesitated.

May you like

Then she looked toward the silent farmhouse.

"Mom said... I needed to learn obedience."
