Chapter 3: The Truth Sarah Couldn't Hide

Sarah stepped inside carrying shopping bags.
She stopped cold.
The bags slipped from her hands.
Glass jars shattered across the hardwood floor.
"You came home early."
The sergeant stood between her and Emily.
His face showed no anger.
That frightened Sarah more than yelling ever could.
"Explain."
Sarah swallowed.
"It wasn't what it looked like."
Emily shrank behind her father.
Sarah noticed.
"I was disciplining her."
"You locked our daughter in a cage."
"She kept lying."
"She's eight."
"You don't understand! I was overwhelmed! I was alone for over a year while you played hero overseas!"
The room fell silent.
The sergeant spoke so quietly Sarah almost couldn't hear him.
"I missed birthdays."
"I missed Christmas."
"I missed my father's funeral."
"I sacrificed everything because I believed my family was safe."
He took one slow step closer.
"But my greatest mistake..."
His eyes filled for the first time.
"...was believing she was safe with you."
Sarah reached for Emily.
