Chapter 4: Justice Begins at Home
Within an hour, sheriff's deputies filled the property.
They photographed the cage.
Collected Emily's torn blanket.
Documented the bruises.
Neighbors slowly gathered outside.
One elderly woman finally confessed she had heard Emily crying several nights before.
Another admitted she'd seen the child inside the cage but assumed it was punishment that "wasn't her business."
The sergeant stared at them.
"It became everyone's business the moment a child was suffering."
Sarah was taken away in handcuffs.
She cried.
She apologized.
She promised she'd never do it again.
Emily never looked at her.
Instead, she quietly slipped her tiny hand into her father's.
The sheriff approached.
"She's safe now."
The sergeant nodded.
"No."
