Chapter 9 - The Birthday Clause

Arthur refused to say more.

Luca could have forced him to remain.

Instead, he let him leave under surveillance.

Marcus hated the decision.

“He confessed to poisoning you.”

“He confessed because he wants us looking at him.”

“That normally makes arrests easier.”

“He wants time.”

“For what?”

Luca looked toward Maya’s photograph.

“Something connected to her birthday.”

The trust documents were buried deeper than any ordinary corporate record.

Luca’s legal team searched overnight.

Nothing.

Then Elena remembered something.

“You told me you used another name that summer.”

“Only Luca.”

“Not Costello.”

“No.”

She frowned.

“Did your father know about me?”

Luca considered it.

“I never introduced you.”

“But did he know?”

Luca went still.

His father’s drivers had always known where Luca went.

His security had known about the apartment.

Antonio Costello could have discovered Elena easily.

Marcus searched old financial records.

At 4:30 a.m., he found a payment.

Twelve years earlier, Antonio Costello had quietly opened an educational trust.

Beneficiary unnamed.

Activation condition: verified biological descendant of Luca Costello.

Elena covered her mouth.

“He knew I was pregnant?”

“Maybe.”

The trust had been created nine days before Luca collapsed.

Its assets were not modest.

They included controlling interests in the family’s waterfront property.

Shipping licenses.

Several industrial developments.

And voting authority over the parent corporation if the beneficiary survived until age twelve.

Maya.

She was not merely Luca’s daughter.

Her existence changed control of the entire Costello empire.

Dominic had spent twelve years operating companies he would lose influence over the moment Maya’s identity became legally recognized.

Elena stepped away from the desk.

“This is why you were poisoned.”

“Partly.”

“And Maya?”

Luca looked at her.

“We do not know whether anyone knew she existed.”

“They know now.”

Silence.

Elena’s fear turned into anger.

“I told you I wanted her normal.”

“I know.”

“This is not normal.”

“I know.”

“She is eleven years old and people she has never met may see her as a corporate threat.”

Luca’s voice hardened.

“Then they will learn she is untouchable.”

Elena pointed at him.

“No.”

Luca stopped.

“You do not turn her into a Costello weapon.”

“She is my daughter.”

“Then be her father.”

Elena’s eyes burned.

“Not her king.”

That sentence struck harder than any accusation.

Before Luca could answer, Tommy ran into the study.

His face was pale.

“Maya’s gone.”

Elena spun around.

“What?”

Tommy held up Maya’s old baseball glove.

“She said she was going to the diamond.”

May you like

His voice shook.

“She never got there.”
