Chapter 6 - The Trust

Arthur Vale had never truly disappeared.
He had simply changed the way he existed.
He lived through corporations.
Foundations.
Holding companies.
Accounts registered in countries Luca rarely used.
Marcus uncovered the first connection after midnight.
Three months before Luca’s collapse, a shell company controlled by Arthur purchased a laboratory supplier.
That supplier had access to the compound found in Luca’s tissue.
Two weeks after Luca collapsed, the same company received eighteen million dollars.
The payment came from a Costello-controlled development fund.
Dominic had authorized it.
Luca stared at the transfer record.
“He paid Vale.”
Marcus nodded.
“That is what it looks like.”
“Or someone made it look that way.”
Marcus waited.
Luca had survived too long by refusing easy answers.
Dominic was compromised.
That much was certain.
But Luca wanted the entire truth.
He summoned Dominic the next morning.
Not to accuse him.
To offer him a lie.
“I’m ending the rehabilitation.”
Dominic stared at him.
“Why?”
“Rachel believes the damage is too extensive.”
Dominic’s shoulders relaxed.
Again, only slightly.
Again, Luca noticed.
“I’m sorry.”
“So am I.”
Luca looked toward the window.
“I’m also revising the family trust.”
That relaxation disappeared.
“In what way?”
“Maya.”
Dominic said nothing.
“I have a daughter.”
“I know.”
“I intend to recognize her legally.”
Dominic leaned back.
“That is sudden.”
“Twelve years late is not sudden.”
“Luca, you barely know the girl.”
“She is my child.”
“And Elena?”
“What about her?”
Dominic’s voice softened.
“You should be careful that emotion does not become leverage.”
Luca’s eyes turned cold.
“Is that concern?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
He rolled closer.
“Then you will understand why I am transferring several voting blocks into an independent trust for Maya.”
Dominic went pale.
There it was.
Not surprise.
Fear.
Luca had finally found the nerve.
“What happens to your shares?” Dominic asked.
“Why?”
“I need to know how governance changes.”
“No.”
Dominic stared at him.
Luca smiled without warmth.
“You want to know whether you lose control.”
“I have protected this family for twelve years.”
“Then protecting my daughter should make you happy.”
Dominic stood.
“You have no idea what you are changing.”
Luca’s smile disappeared.
“Then explain it.”
Dominic opened his mouth.
Stopped.
Then walked away.
Three hours later, Marcus received an alert.
Someone had tried to access Maya’s paternity report from an external server.
May you like
The access request came through an old Costello legal account.
Registered to Arthur Vale.
