Chapter 18 - The Second Name

The second beneficiary was not a child.
It was not Arthur.
It was not Dominic.
The name on the sealed amendment was Elena Harper.
She stared at the document.
“That is impossible.”
The trustee shook his head.
“Antonio Costello added you thirteen years ago.”
Before Maya was born.
Before Luca collapsed.
Before anyone knew whether Luca had a child.
Luca read the clause twice.
If Elena Harper became the mother of Luca Costello’s biological child, she received an independent twenty-percent voting block.
It could not be transferred to Luca.
It could not be controlled by the Costello family.
It existed for one purpose.
To make Elena impossible to erase.
She sat down.
“He knew.”
Luca nodded.
“He knew more than we thought.”
Dominic approached slowly.
“I can explain.”
Luca looked at him.
Dominic’s court agreement required him to cooperate.
That did not require Luca to welcome him.
Dominic faced Elena.
“Antonio met you once.”
Elena frowned.
“No.”
“At the diner where you worked.”
Elena’s face changed.
An older man.
Gray coat.
Black coffee.
He had tipped fifty dollars and asked whether Luca treated her well.
She had assumed he was simply strange.
“That was him.”
Dominic nodded.
“He came home and told me Luca had finally met someone who didn’t care who he was.”
Luca looked away.
His father had never mentioned it.
Dominic continued.
“Antonio was already sick.”
“Arthur had begun manipulating his medication.”
“He knew something was wrong.”
“So he changed the trust.”
Elena looked at Luca.
“He was protecting Maya before she existed.”
“And you,” Luca said.
The truth hurt differently now.
Antonio had made mistakes.
Many of them.
But before dying, he had tried to create one clean exit from the world he had built.
Arthur had spent years trying to seal it shut.
That evening, Elena found Luca alone beside the lake.
He stood using the cane.
“You should sit.”
“So says everyone.”
She stopped beside him.
“I do not want the shares.”
“They are yours.”
“I never asked for them.”
“That is probably why he gave them to you.”
She looked at him.
“What do I do with them?”
Luca watched Maya and Tommy on the diamond.
“Whatever protects her.”
Elena was quiet.
Then she slipped her hand into his.
Not romantically.
Not quite.
May you like
But she did not pull away.
And Luca understood that some recoveries happened one step at a time.
