Chapter 16 - What Maya Inherited

Arthur Vale was arrested before sunrise.

The confession recorded inside the clinic was enough to hold him.

The financial records were enough to keep him there.

Dominic requested no special treatment.

He gave prosecutors everything.

Names.

Accounts.

Payments.

Hospitals.

Doctors.

For twelve years, he had stored evidence he was too afraid to use.

Now he surrendered all of it.

Luca did not visit him.

Not yet.

Some wounds required truth before forgiveness could even become a question.

Three weeks later, Luca sat beside Elena in a courthouse office.

Maya sat between them swinging her feet.

The trustee placed a document on the table.

“Maya Harper Costello.”

Maya frowned.

“I get two last names?”

“If you want them,” Elena said.

“What if I just stay Maya Harper?”

Luca answered immediately.

“Then you stay Maya Harper.”

The trustee glanced at him.

Luca did not care.

A name was not ownership.

He had learned that late.

The trustee explained the assets.

Maya’s eyes became increasingly confused.

Finally she interrupted.

“Do I own the baseball field?”

Luca smiled.

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

The trustee blinked.

“That is the part you care about?”

“And the hedge.”

Elena laughed.

The trustee continued.

Upon Maya’s twelfth birthday, the trust would activate.

Until she reached adulthood, Luca and Elena would jointly supervise it.

Neither parent could act alone.

Antonio had designed it deliberately.

Power required agreement.

Luca suspected his father had understood his son better than Luca wanted to admit.

Afterward, Elena and Luca stood outside the courthouse.

Snow had begun falling.

“What happens to the empire?” Elena asked.

“It changes.”

“How?”

“I’m dismantling the structures Arthur used.”

Elena studied him.

“That will cost you money.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Possibly hundreds of millions.”

She waited.

Luca smiled slightly.

“You said honest when it costs something.”

“I meant emotionally.”

“You should have specified.”

She almost smiled.

Then Luca became serious.

“I will not give Maya an empire built on secrets.”

Elena looked through the courthouse window at Maya and Tommy arguing over a vending machine.

“Good.”

Luca looked at her.

“And us?”

Elena’s expression changed.

“There is no us yet.”

He nodded.

“But?”

“But you are becoming the kind of man I can let her know.”

May you like

For Luca, that was enough.

For now.
