Chapter 6 - The First Secret

Richard did not sleep.
By three in the morning, Sterling Manor was almost empty.
The guests had been released after giving statements.
Police remained throughout the west wing.
Crime scene technicians moved in and out of the hidden passages.
Vanessa had not been found.
Julian had been detained after attempting to leave through the kitchen courtyard.
Dr. Graves had been taken into custody.
Charles Wexler had requested an attorney and refused to answer further questions.
Marcus remained under police supervision but had not been arrested.
And Ethan slept in Richard’s bed with Hannah sitting beside him.
Richard stood in his study staring at Adrian Vale’s old employee card.
Detective Ortiz entered.
“We found a way into Room Seventeen.”
Richard turned.
“Where?”
“Under the old wine cellar.”
“Was Olivia there?”
“No.”
Marcus, who had been waiting near the window, closed his eyes.
Richard asked.
“What was there?”
Ortiz looked toward the hallway.
“You should see it.”
The three descended beneath the manor.
The wine cellar occupied the oldest section of the estate.
Richard had visited it hundreds of times.
He had never noticed the seam behind the third rack.
Crime scene technicians had removed the entire shelving unit.
A steel door stood behind it.
The number 17 had been stamped above the handle.
Richard used the brass key.
This time it turned.
The room beyond was not a cell.
It was an archive.
Metal shelves filled the walls.
Boxes were stacked from floor to ceiling.
Old videotapes.
Photographs.
Financial ledgers.
Audio cassettes.
Hard drives.
File folders.
Richard stared.
“What is this?”
Detective Ortiz answered.
“Your family history.”
Marcus picked up one file.
It was labeled 1997 — MERCER ACQUISITION.
Another read 2001 — SENATOR CALDWELL.
Another read 2008 — VALE.
Richard went directly to it.
He opened the box.
Inside were photographs of Adrian Vale.
Bank statements.
Copies of emails.
Surveillance pictures.
And a typed report signed by Conrad Sterling.
Richard’s hands began shaking.
He read the first paragraph.
Adrian Vale had discovered an offshore fund.
It was connected to Sterling Global.
Hundreds of millions of dollars had been diverted through shell companies over two decades.
Richard turned pages rapidly.
“Did my father steal this money?”
Ortiz said nothing.
Richard found another document.
A memorandum.
VICTOR STERLING AUTHORIZED TO RESOLVE VALE MATTER.
Richard stared.
His uncle’s name.
Then he found a photograph.
Adrian Vale being forced into a black sedan.
The date was fourteen years earlier.
Marcus whispered.
“My God.”
Richard looked at Ortiz.
“My father ordered this?”
“We don’t know.”
“He signed the memo.”
“That is not the same as knowing what happened afterward.”
Richard laughed bitterly.
“You’re being kinder to him than I am.”
He continued searching.
At the bottom of the box was a birth certificate.
Catherine Elizabeth Vale.
Father: Adrian Michael Vale.
Mother: Rebecca Vale.
Richard stopped breathing.
The date of birth matched Vanessa’s age.
Marcus stared over his shoulder.
“Vanessa is Adrian’s daughter.”
Richard sat down.
Everything shifted.
Vanessa had not married him by accident.
She had entered Sterling Manor carrying another name.
Another history.
Another purpose.
Richard remembered the first time they met.
A charity auction in Boston.
She had laughed at one of his jokes.
She had refused his first invitation to dinner.
He had spent three months pursuing her.
He had believed it was romantic.
Now he wondered how much had been planned.
Ortiz spoke.
“She knew who you were before you met.”
Richard looked at the document.
“She came for revenge.”
Marcus shook his head.
“Then why have Ethan?”
Richard’s expression changed.
The question hurt more than he expected.
Was Ethan planned too?
Was their child part of some long game?
Richard stood.
“No.”
Ortiz watched him.
“No what?”
“Whatever Vanessa did, Ethan is not part of this.”
“I didn’t say he was.”
Richard looked at Marcus.
“And nobody will.”
Marcus nodded.
They continued searching.
A technician called from the back of the room.
“Detective.”
Ortiz walked over.
“What?”
The technician pointed at a cabinet.
It had recently been opened.
Dust marks showed where files had been removed.
“Somebody got here before us.”
“How recently?”
“Hours.”
Richard looked around.
“Vanessa.”
Ortiz shook her head.
“We sealed the cellar before she could have reached it.”
“Then who?”
The technician held up a torn piece of paper.
Only part of a label remained.
REED, ELENA — ACTIVE.
Marcus stared.
“My wife had a file?”
Richard looked at him.
Marcus stepped forward.
“What was in it?”
“We don’t know.”
He searched the empty shelf.
Nothing.
Then he saw another folder.
OLIVIA REED.
Marcus tore it open.
Inside were school photographs.
Medical records.
Her daily routine.
Pictures taken through windows.
Marcus turned white.
“They watched her.”
Ortiz looked over his shoulder.
“For years.”
Marcus slammed the folder down.
“Vanessa said she had Olivia.”
Richard answered.
“She may have believed she did.”
Marcus looked at him.
“You believe her now?”
“No.”
Richard stared at the old archive.
“But I believe someone bigger is moving everyone.”
He found a handwritten note inside Olivia’s folder.
Marcus read it first.
His face collapsed.
Richard took it.
MARCUS WILL COMPLY IF CHILD IS CONTROLLED.
Below that was a signature.
V.S.
Victor Sterling.
Richard whispered.
“Victor.”
Detective Ortiz nodded.
“It fits.”
Marcus looked toward the door.
“Then Victor has Olivia.”
“Maybe.”
“And Elena?”
Richard pointed at the removed file.
“If Elena is alive, she may have discovered Victor’s operation.”
Marcus became quiet.
Richard understood what that meant.
Perhaps Elena had not abandoned her family.
Perhaps she had disappeared to protect them.
Or perhaps she had become part of Victor’s organization.
Both possibilities were unbearable.
A technician called from another shelf.
“We found video.”
He inserted an old memory card into an evidence laptop.
The screen flickered.
A timestamp appeared.
Fourteen years earlier.
A younger Adrian Vale sat in what looked like Room Seventeen.
His hands were free.
He looked directly into the camera.
Someone offscreen asked.
“Where are the copies?”
Adrian smiled.
“You already lost.”
Victor Sterling stepped into view.
Richard recognized him immediately.
Younger.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Victor sat across from Adrian.
“You think evidence matters?”
Adrian answered.
“It matters to your brother.”
Victor laughed.
“My brother gave me permission to solve you.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Conrad doesn’t know what you’re doing.”
Victor leaned forward.
“He knows enough.”
Adrian stared at him.
“My daughter knows everything.”
Victor stopped smiling.
Richard felt his stomach drop.
Adrian continued.
“If I disappear, Catherine will grow up knowing exactly which family did it.”
Victor stood.
“Then perhaps we should find Catherine.”
The video ended.
Richard stared at the black screen.
Marcus whispered.
“Vanessa spent her entire life knowing.”
Richard nodded.
Then the laptop chimed.
Another file existed on the card.
More recent.
Timestamped six months earlier.
Ortiz opened it.
Vanessa appeared on the screen.
She was sitting in the same room.
Room Seventeen.
Across from her sat an older man.
His hair was almost completely white.
His features resembled Conrad Sterling so strongly that Ethan’s confusion made perfect sense.
Victor.
Vanessa spoke first.
“You killed my father.”
Victor smiled.
“And you married my nephew.”
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“I want the archive.”
Victor replied.
“You want revenge.”
“I want the truth.”
Victor laughed.
“No.”
He leaned toward her.
“You want Richard to suffer.”
Vanessa looked away.
Victor’s smile widened.
“So I’m going to help you.”
Vanessa looked back.
“And what do you want?”
Victor answered.
“Everything Richard owns.”
The recording continued.
Vanessa whispered.
“And if I refuse?”
Victor placed a photograph on the table.
Richard could not see it clearly.
Vanessa could.
Her face changed instantly.
“No.”
Victor said.
“Then do exactly what I tell you.”
Vanessa’s hands began trembling.
“What have you done?”
Victor smiled.
“Nothing yet.”
Vanessa stared at the photograph.
Richard leaned closer to the screen.
Ortiz paused the video.
She magnified the image.
The photograph became blurry.
Then slightly clearer.
A sleeping child.
Ethan.
But the photograph had been taken more than six months earlier.
Ethan had been barely one.
Richard felt sick.
Victor had been watching his son for at least a year.
Ortiz resumed the recording.
Vanessa whispered.
“If you touch him, I will kill you.”
Victor’s smile disappeared.
“Then poison Richard.”
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at Richard.
Richard watched his wife close her eyes on the screen.
Victor continued.
“Take control of the company.”
“Give me the archive.”
“And when Sterling Global belongs to you, I give you your son back.”
Vanessa looked confused.
“He is upstairs.”
Victor smiled.
“For now.”
The recording ended.
Richard stared at the frozen image.
His wife had been blackmailed.
But she had still made a choice.
She had started poisoning him.
She had joined the conspiracy.
She had hidden Ethan.
Victim and perpetrator had become impossible to separate.
Then Detective Ortiz’s phone rang.
She answered.
“Ortiz.”
Her expression changed.
“When?”
She listened.
“Seal the property.”
Richard stepped closer.
“What happened?”
Ortiz ended the call.
“Julian is gone.”
Richard stared.
“He was in police custody.”
“Someone triggered the fire alarm in the east wing.”
Marcus looked toward the ceiling.
“A diversion.”
Ortiz nodded.
“During the evacuation, Julian disappeared.”
Richard’s phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
Julian was sitting in a chair.
His hands were tied.
Blood ran from a cut above his eyebrow.
Behind him stood Vanessa.
Richard stared.
A message followed.
IF YOU WANT YOUR BROTHER ALIVE, COME TO THE OLD STERLING FACTORY.
ALONE.
Then another message appeared.
And this one made Richard’s entire body go cold.
May you like
BRING ETHAN.
