Chapter 13 - Vanessa Was Never Vanessa

Richard did not move.

Ethan played quietly with the torn teddy bear on the floor beside Hannah.

He had no idea the adults around him were discovering that almost every name in his family was a lie.

Richard stared at Elena.

“Start from the beginning.”

Elena sat.

Marcus remained beside Olivia.

Detective Ortiz activated a recorder.

Elena noticed.

“Everything I say becomes evidence.”

Ortiz nodded.

“Yes.”

Elena took a breath.

“Adrian Vale had two children.”

“Daniel and Catherine.”

“Catherine died when she was nine.”

“How?”

“Leukemia.”

Richard frowned.

“Then who is Vanessa?”

Elena looked at him.

“A girl named Rebecca Shaw.”

The name meant nothing.

“She grew up in foster care.”

“Her mother died from an overdose.”

“Her father was unknown.”

“Alexander found her when she was fifteen.”

“Why?”

“Because she resembled Catherine.”

Richard felt sick.

“Alexander replaced his dead granddaughter?”

“Yes.”

“To control Adrian.”

Richard understood.

If Adrian was alive, Alexander could use a fake Catherine to manipulate him.

Elena nodded.

“Alexander had already told Adrian that his daughter survived.”

“He showed him photographs.”

“Letters.”

“Recorded messages.”

“All fake.”

Richard thought of Vanessa.

A fifteen-year-old foster child.

Chosen because she looked like a dead girl.

Given a new identity.

Taught a false history.

Fed hatred.

Then sent toward Richard years later.

“What did Vanessa know?”

“At first?”

“Nothing.”

“She believed she really was Catherine.”

Richard stared.

“How?”

Elena spoke carefully.

“Trauma.”

“Drugs.”

“Repeated conditioning.”

“Forged documents.”

“Alexander convinced her that much of her childhood memory loss came from an accident.”

Richard’s anger turned cold.

“She was fifteen.”

“Yes.”

“He manufactured her life.”

“Yes.”

“Then told her my family killed her father.”

“Yes.”

Marcus whispered.

“My God.”

Richard remembered all the times Vanessa woke from nightmares.

All the times she refused to discuss childhood photographs.

All the times she said her memories before sixteen felt “foggy.”

He had assumed trauma from losing her parents.

In a sense, it had been trauma.

Just not the story either of them understood.

“When did she learn the truth?”

Elena answered.

“Three days ago.”

“Before Ethan disappeared?”

“The same night.”

Richard’s mind raced.

That was the meeting Ethan recorded.

“What happened?”

“Elena found Catherine’s original death certificate.”

“I showed Vanessa.”

Richard closed his eyes.

So on the same night Vanessa discovered her entire identity was fabricated, Ethan overheard the conspiracy.

Alexander accelerated Richard’s death.

Julian demanded power.

Everything collapsed at once.

Elena continued.

“Vanessa wanted to take Ethan and run.”

“Alexander had Olivia.”

“He threatened Marcus.”

“He threatened Daniel.”

“He threatened Vanessa with Adrian.”

Richard opened his eyes.

“She knows Adrian is alive?”

“Not for certain.”

“She knows Alexander claimed he was.”

Richard looked toward the phone.

“Pier Nine.”

Ortiz said.

“We’re tracing nearby cameras.”

Richard turned back to Elena.

“Who is Vanessa?”

Elena understood the deeper question.

“I don’t know.”

“Rebecca Shaw disappeared officially at fifteen.”

“Catherine Vale appeared at sixteen.”

“Years later Catherine became Vanessa Sterling.”

Richard whispered.

“She has been someone else for half her life.”

“Yes.”

“And Ethan?”

Elena looked at him.

Richard remembered Daniel’s claim about the fertility clinic.

“What happened at the clinic?”

Elena hesitated.

“Alexander arranged it.”

“Whose embryo?”

“I don’t know.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“Elena.”

“I genuinely don’t.”

“Was Vanessa aware?”

“No.”

“So she believed Ethan was biologically ours.”

“Yes.”

“Until when?”

Elena looked toward the child.

“Until three days ago.”

Richard felt another blow.

“What did she learn?”

“Alexander told her he switched the sample.”

“To whose?”

“He didn’t say.”

Richard stared.

“So she discovered she was not Catherine.”

“She discovered Ethan might not be biologically mine.”

“And then?”

“She hid him.”

Elena nodded.

Richard’s anger began to acquire a different shape.

Vanessa’s actions remained unforgivable.

But her motive for hiding Ethan was becoming clearer.

If Alexander intended to use Ethan as a Sterling heir, discovering he was not Richard’s biological child could make Ethan expendable.

Vanessa may have hidden him because Alexander had suddenly changed his value from asset to liability.

Richard whispered.

“She told me he was dead because Alexander would stop looking.”

Elena nodded.

“That was her plan.”

“She believed if the world thought Ethan died, Alexander might leave him alone.”

“Yes.”

Richard laughed without humor.

“So she destroyed me to protect him.”

“Yes.”

“And poisoned me because Alexander threatened him.”

“Yes.”

“And joined a coup because Alexander threatened Adrian.”

“Yes.”

Richard looked away.

“How much of her did he leave untouched?”

Elena had no answer.

Ortiz’s phone rang.

She listened.

“We found Pier Nine.”

Richard turned.

“Where?”

“Industrial marina east of Millbrook.”

“How far?”

“Forty minutes.”

Richard stood.

Ortiz immediately said.

“You are not going alone.”

“I know.”

“You are also not carrying the real key.”

Richard looked at the microchip.

“No.”

Elena stood.

“Alexander will test it.”

“Can we copy it?”

“Yes.”

“Can we make a decoy that passes briefly?”

Elena thought.

“For maybe thirty seconds.”

“That’s enough.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“I’m going.”

Richard shook his head.

“You have Olivia.”

Marcus looked toward his daughter.

Olivia held Elena’s hand.

The decision was visible in his face.

For the first time in months, Marcus chose his daughter over the mission.

He nodded.

“I stay.”

Elena looked at Richard.

“I go.”

Marcus immediately objected.

“No.”

“Alexander asked for Catherine.”

“He means Vanessa.”

“No.”

Elena’s expression hardened.

“He knows I know the truth.”

“Why would he call you Catherine?”

Elena paused.

Then reached inside her jacket.

She removed an old photograph.

Two girls stood side by side.

One was young Catherine Vale.

The other looked almost identical.

Richard stared.

Elena whispered.

“Catherine had a twin.”

Everyone went silent.

“Her name was Elena.”

Marcus slowly sat down.

Richard looked from the photograph to the woman.

“You.”

Elena nodded.

“My original name is Elena Vale.”

Marcus stared at his wife as though meeting her again.

“You told me your parents were dead.”

“They are.”

“You told me you grew up in Baltimore.”

“I did after I escaped.”

Richard looked at her.

“So Adrian Vale is your father too.”

“Yes.”

“Vanessa is living your dead sister’s identity.”

“Yes.”

“Alexander is your grandfather.”

“Yes.”

“Daniel is your brother.”

“Yes.”

Richard finally understood why Elena had spent years infiltrating Alexander’s organization.

This was not simply professional.

It was family.

Elena continued.

“After Catherine died, Alexander tried to use me.”

“I ran.”

“I changed names.”

“Years later I became Elena Reed.”

“Then I met Marcus.”

Marcus looked wounded.

“You never told me.”

“I wanted one part of my life that did not belong to Alexander.”

Marcus turned away.

Olivia looked confused.

Elena’s face crumpled.

“I’m sorry.”

Marcus whispered.

“Later.”

The word contained both pain and hope.

Elena looked at Richard.

“Alexander knows I am the real surviving Vale daughter.”

“That is why he said bring Catherine.”

Richard nodded.

“He wants you.”

“He wants the key.”

“He wants me.”

“And he wants Vanessa broken.”

Richard understood.

Alexander intended to put the real daughter beside the replacement.

To destroy Vanessa’s last belief in herself.

“No.”

Elena stared.

“You’re not going.”

“Richard.”

“He has already used enough of you.”

“He has your wife.”

“He has my father.”

“Maybe.”

Richard looked toward Ethan.

“And I have a son who needs at least one adult in this family to stop walking voluntarily into traps.”

Ortiz almost smiled.

“Finally.”

Richard turned.

“But I am still going.”

Her smile disappeared.

“Of course.”

They prepared the decoy key.

Richard hid the real chip somewhere Alexander would never expect.

He gave it to Hannah.

She stared at him.

“Why me?”

“Because everyone in this story keeps watching powerful people.”

“No one notices the maid.”

Hannah closed her hand around it.

“What if something happens to you?”

Richard looked at Ethan.

“Then give it to Detective Ortiz.”

“And if something happens to her?”

“Destroy it.”

Hannah nodded.

Richard knelt in front of Ethan.

“I’m going out.”

Ethan frowned.

“Again?”

Richard smiled sadly.

“Again.”

“Bring Mommy.”

Richard looked at him.

“I’m going to try.”

Ethan touched Richard’s cheek.

“Mommy bad good.”

Richard almost laughed.

“Yes.”

“I’m beginning to understand.”

He kissed him.

Then left.

At Pier Nine, fog covered the water.

A warehouse stood near the river.

One light burned inside.

Richard entered alone.

He carried the decoy key.

Vanessa sat in a chair beneath the light.

Her face was bruised.

Her hands were tied.

Richard stopped.

She stared at him.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered.

“You came.”

Richard answered.

“Ethan asked me to bring his mother home.”

Her eyes filled.

Richard continued.

“That is the only reason I am here.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

A door opened behind her.

Alexander entered.

Beside him walked an elderly man.

Thin.

Weak.

White hair.

Vanessa looked over her shoulder.

Her face changed.

The man stared at her.

Then whispered one name.

“Catherine?”

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Alexander smiled.

“Richard.”

He rested a hand on the old man’s shoulder.

“Meet Adrian Vale.”

Vanessa began crying.

Adrian looked at her.

Then shook his head.

“No.”

Alexander’s smile widened.

“That isn’t Catherine.”

Vanessa stared at him.

Adrian whispered.

“My Catherine died.”

Vanessa’s entire world broke across her face.

May you like

And Alexander laughed.
