Chapter 10 - The Missing Recorder

Detective Ortiz reacted first.

“Seal the manor.”

Officers moved immediately.

Richard stood motionless.

“The recorder was in evidence.”

Ortiz’s expression became furious.

“I know.”

“Who took it?”

“We’re checking.”

Marcus grabbed the security console.

“Camera archive.”

The technician pulled up footage.

At 3:18 a.m., a uniformed officer entered the temporary evidence room.

He signed the log.

Removed an evidence bag.

Walked out.

Ortiz leaned toward the screen.

“Zoom.”

The officer’s face became clear.

She swore.

Richard looked at her.

“Who?”

“He is not one of mine.”

The badge was fake.

The uniform had been enough to move through the chaos.

Richard remembered Elena’s note.

DO NOT TRUST THE POLICE OFFICER WHO ARRIVES FIRST.

“Was he the first officer here?”

Ortiz checked.

Her face hardened.

“Yes.”

Marcus said.

“Alexander’s man.”

The footage showed the fake officer leaving through the service entrance.

Timestamp.

Twenty-three minutes earlier.

Richard looked toward the driveway.

“He has a head start.”

Ortiz radioed the description.

Richard asked.

“If Alexander gets the key, what happens?”

Marcus answered.

“He no longer needs anyone.”

Including the hostages.

Richard did not need the words spoken.

He walked toward the garage.

Ortiz blocked him.

“Where are you going?”

“Factory.”

“We are still assembling tactical units.”

“Then assemble them on the road.”

“Richard.”

“My wife just told me everyone is alive.”

“Your wife also poisoned you.”

“I know.”

“And hid your son.”

“I know.”

“And lied about his death.”

Richard stepped closer.

“I know exactly what my wife has done.”

His voice was quiet.

“But I am not allowing Alexander to decide whether she deserves to live.”

Ortiz studied him.

Then moved aside.

“You follow my instructions.”

Richard nodded.

It was not entirely sincere.

The convoy left Sterling Manor before dawn.

Hannah watched from an upstairs window.

Ethan stood beside her.

“Daddy go?”

“Yes.”

“Bring Mommy?”

Hannah looked down.

The question surprised her.

After everything, Ethan still thought of Vanessa as his mother.

Fear had not erased love.

Children were unfairly loyal that way.

“I think he’s going to try.”

Ethan held the window frame.

“Mommy scared.”

Hannah remembered the recorder.

The crying.

The threats.

“Yes.”

Ethan whispered.

“Grandpa bad.”

“Alexander?”

Ethan nodded.

Hannah crouched.

“Did Alexander ever hurt you?”

Ethan shook his head.

“Yell.”

“Did he hurt Mommy?”

Ethan nodded.

Hannah’s stomach tightened.

“Did he hit her?”

Ethan touched his own cheek.

“Mommy fall.”

Hannah closed her eyes briefly.

Then Ethan said something else.

“Mommy hide me.”

“I know.”

“Bad Grandpa find.”

Hannah stared.

“Your mommy hid you from Alexander?”

Ethan nodded.

“Mommy say quiet so Grandpa no find.”

That complicated everything again.

Vanessa had imprisoned Ethan.

But perhaps she had also concealed him from someone worse.

Hannah asked.

“Why did Mommy say you were dead?”

Ethan frowned.

The question was too abstract.

Hannah simplified.

“Did Mommy say Daddy couldn’t see you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Daddy cry.”

Hannah felt her throat tighten.

Vanessa had known exactly what the lie would do to Richard.

Yet she had done it anyway.

Ethan reached for Hannah’s hand.

“Blue lady say Mommy bad good.”

Hannah almost laughed at the strange phrasing.

“What does that mean?”

Ethan shrugged.

“Bad good.”

Perhaps Elena had tried to explain that Vanessa had done terrible things for reasons she thought were protective.

Hannah wondered whether adults were really much better at understanding that contradiction.

At the factory, the first tactical team arrived at 5:02 a.m.

The old Sterling textile complex had been abandoned for fifteen years.

Broken windows covered the six-story brick building.

A rusted water tower rose above the roof.

Fog hung across the empty loading yard.

Richard stood beside Ortiz behind an armored vehicle.

Marcus was nearby.

“We have heat signatures.”

Ortiz pointed to a tablet.

“Six on the second floor.”

“Could include Vanessa, Julian, Olivia, Elena, Alexander, and one guard.”

“Could.”

“Any others?”

“Unknown.”

Marcus looked toward the building.

“I know the old layout.”

Richard frowned.

“How?”

“Security assessments.”

“There’s a freight tunnel under the eastern loading dock.”

Ortiz shook her head.

“No independent movement.”

Marcus stared at the building.

“Olivia is in there.”

“I know.”

“You have a daughter?”

Ortiz looked at him.

“Yes.”

“Then stop talking to me like I’m one of your officers.”

Ortiz held his gaze.

“I’m talking to you like a father I want to send home with his child.”

Marcus’s anger faded slightly.

The radio crackled.

A vehicle approaching.

Everyone turned.

A police cruiser entered the factory yard.

It stopped.

The driver’s door opened.

The fake officer stepped out.

Richard recognized him from the video.

He carried the evidence bag containing Ethan’s recorder.

Ortiz shouted.

“Hands!”

The man stopped.

Dozens of weapons aimed at him.

He smiled.

Then held the recorder above his head.

“I have something Alexander wants.”

Ortiz ordered.

“Put it down.”

The man laughed.

“You don’t understand.”

Richard stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

The fake officer looked at him.

“Daniel Vale.”

Richard froze.

Another Vale.

The man saw recognition.

“Vanessa never mentioned me?”

“No.”

Daniel smiled.

“She wouldn’t.”

Richard looked at his age.

Mid-thirties.

“Who are you to Vanessa?”

Daniel’s smile vanished.

“Her brother.”

Richard stared.

Vanessa had told him she was an only child.

Daniel continued.

“Adrian Vale had two children.”

“Catherine and Daniel.”

“Alexander took us after our father disappeared.”

“He raised us to hate the Sterlings.”

Richard felt sick.

“So you knew Vanessa was Catherine.”

“I knew before you did.”

“And you helped Alexander.”

Daniel looked toward the factory.

“For years.”

Marcus pointed at the recorder.

“Give it to us.”

Daniel laughed.

“No.”

“Alexander has my daughter.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“So?”

Marcus surged forward.

Ortiz stopped him.

Daniel continued.

“You think Olivia is the only child he took?”

He looked at Richard.

“My sister was sixteen when Alexander started preparing her to marry into your family.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“She was sixteen?”

“Not when she met you.”

“I know.”

“But when he started building her identity.”

Daniel’s voice became bitter.

“He taught her what wine you liked.”

“What charities you attended.”

“What kind of women you dated.”

“What books you pretended to read.”

Richard stared.

“He built Catherine to become Vanessa.”

Daniel nodded.

“And you fell in love right on schedule.”

The words cut.

Daniel lifted the recorder.

“But she stopped following the schedule.”

“When?”

“When Ethan was born.”

Richard’s expression shifted.

Daniel looked at the recorder.

“She wanted out.”

“Alexander refused.”

“So you stayed loyal?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I stayed alive.”

“That is not an answer.”

Daniel looked at him.

“My wife is inside that factory too.”

Richard frowned.

“Who?”

Daniel glanced toward the second floor.

“Elena.”

Marcus made a strangled sound.

“What?”

Daniel turned toward him.

Marcus looked ready to tear through the police line.

“You said Elena is your wife.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Richard realized.

Not romantic wife.

Cover identity.

A false marriage used during infiltration.

Marcus misunderstood.

Daniel clarified.

“On paper.”

Marcus breathed again.

“We used a married identity to infiltrate Alexander’s company.”

Richard stared.

“You were helping Elena?”

“Eventually.”

“Whose side are you on?”

Daniel laughed.

“I stopped knowing years ago.”

Ortiz ordered him again.

“Put down the recorder.”

Daniel looked at the building.

“No.”

He raised his voice.

“ALEXANDER!”

Nothing.

“I BROUGHT THE KEY!”

A speaker crackled above the loading dock.

Alexander’s voice filled the yard.

“Come inside, Daniel.”

Daniel stared upward.

“I want my sister.”

“You may have what remains of her.”

Richard stepped forward.

“Vanessa is alive.”

Alexander laughed over the speaker.

“For now.”

Daniel looked at Richard.

Then whispered.

“Follow me in two minutes.”

Ortiz grabbed his arm.

“You’re not going anywhere.”

Daniel leaned close.

“If you storm that building, Alexander detonates the gas line.”

Ortiz froze.

“What gas line?”

“He restored the old boiler system.”

“Every hostage dies.”

Richard looked at the building.

Daniel lifted the recorder.

“He wants the key enough to negotiate.”

Marcus said.

“Then negotiate.”

Daniel walked toward the entrance.

Before crossing the threshold, he turned to Richard.

“My sister did terrible things to you.”

Richard said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“But if you want to know why she locked Ethan behind that wall, ask her what Alexander made her watch first.”

Then he disappeared inside.

Exactly two minutes later, Richard’s phone buzzed.

A live video feed appeared.

Daniel stood in the factory’s second-floor production room.

Vanessa and Julian were tied to chairs.

Olivia sat beside Elena.

Alexander stood between them.

Daniel held out the recorder.

“I brought it.”

Alexander smiled.

“Good boy.”

Daniel’s face tightened at the phrase.

Alexander reached for the recorder.

Then Vanessa screamed.

“DON’T!”

Daniel hesitated.

Alexander’s smile vanished.

He pulled a gun and pointed it at Vanessa.

Richard’s heart stopped.

Daniel looked toward the hidden camera.

Then toward Alexander.

He smiled faintly.

“You spent thirty years teaching us to betray each other.”

Alexander frowned.

Daniel opened his hand.

The recorder dropped.

And before it hit the floor, he stomped on it.

Plastic exploded beneath his shoe.

Vanessa screamed.

Alexander fired.

May you like

The video went black.
