Chapter 19 - Hannah’s Secret

Richard did not shout.
That frightened Hannah more.
He simply looked at her.
“What did you inject into Ethan?”
Hannah raised both hands.
“A sedative.”
Vanessa stepped toward her.
“You?”
Hannah nodded.
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“You found him before the ballroom.”
“Yes.”
“How long before?”
“One night.”
The betrayal landed.
Hannah had presented herself as discovering Ethan after hearing his screams.
That had been partly true.
But not the whole truth.
Richard asked.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Hannah looked toward the hidden passage.
“Because Ethan wasn’t the first child I found.”
Marcus entered.
His face changed.
“Olivia.”
Hannah nodded.
“I found Olivia three weeks ago.”
Marcus stared.
“Where?”
“In the blue room.”
“How did you get there?”
Hannah looked at Richard.
“Your father showed me.”
Richard froze.
“Conrad?”
“Yes.”
Richard’s anger shifted again.
Conrad had involved Hannah.
Another secret.
Another person supposedly protecting him.
“Start at the beginning.”
Hannah sat.
“My mother worked at Sterling Manor.”
Richard frowned.
“I know.”
“Evelyn Mercer.”
“Yes.”
Hannah looked at the archive room.
“She worked for your mother.”
Richard remembered.
A quiet woman.
Housekeeping supervisor.
She had retired after Evelyn Sterling died.
“My mother knew Evelyn was being poisoned.”
Richard stared.
“She knew?”
“She tried to warn Conrad.”
“Why didn’t she go to police?”
“She did.”
Hannah’s expression hardened.
“The officer she contacted worked for Alexander.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Of course.
“The next week my mother was attacked.”
“She survived.”
“She stopped talking.”
Hannah continued.
“Before she died three years ago, she gave me a box.”
“Inside were letters from your mother.”
“Notes.”
“Names.”
“And instructions.”
“Come work at Sterling Manor.”
Richard stared.
“You came here intentionally.”
“Yes.”
“To investigate?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa whispered.
“Everyone came into this house with a secret identity.”
Hannah almost smiled sadly.
“Apparently.”
Richard asked.
“How did Conrad find you?”
“He contacted me eight months ago.”
“He knew who my mother was.”
“He said Alexander had become active again.”
“He asked me to watch the household.”
“You were spying on us.”
“Yes.”
Richard laughed bitterly.
“At least you admit it quickly.”
Hannah looked ashamed.
“I liked you.”
“That made it worse.”
Richard absorbed that.
It sounded similar to Vanessa.
Plans collapsing because real relationships intruded.
“Tell me about Olivia.”
Hannah continued.
“I followed Elena through the service tunnel.”
“I found Olivia.”
“Elena told me she was keeping her hidden from Alexander’s guards.”
“Then why not tell Marcus?”
“Because Alexander monitored him constantly.”
Marcus looked furious.
“You could have found a way.”
Hannah nodded.
“Yes.”
“I should have.”
Marcus turned away.
Richard asked.
“And Ethan?”
“The night Vanessa hid him, Conrad contacted me.”
“He told me to find the child.”
“I did.”
“Why sedate him?”
Hannah began crying.
“Because Alexander’s men were searching the walls.”
“Ethan was screaming.”
“They would have found him.”
Richard’s expression changed.
“What did you use?”
“A pediatric sedative Dr. Ross later confirmed was safe at the dose.”
“You had that prepared?”
“Conrad did.”
Richard stared.
“My father gave you sedatives for my child?”
“He said only if necessary.”
Richard’s anger returned.
“Everyone decides what is necessary except me.”
Hannah nodded.
“I know.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Why did Ethan scream when you broke through the wall if you already knew he was there?”
Hannah answered.
“Because I needed witnesses.”
Richard understood.
“You staged the discovery.”
“Not Ethan’s fear.”
“Not your reaction.”
“But the timing.”
“Yes.”
Hannah looked around the ballroom.
“I knew if I simply brought Ethan privately to Richard, Alexander could make him disappear again.”
“So I exposed him in front of a hundred people.”
“Phones.”
“Witnesses.”
“Police.”
Richard stared.
“You made it impossible to erase him.”
Hannah nodded.
Vanessa whispered.
“That saved him.”
Richard looked at Hannah.
“Yes.”
It had.
He could not ignore that.
Hannah had lied.
She had sedated Ethan.
She had manipulated the scene.
But unlike Alexander’s people, her deception had forced the truth into public view.
Richard asked.
“Why pretend you didn’t know?”
“Because Conrad told me if Alexander realized I was working with him, my younger brother would become a target.”
Richard rubbed his face.
“Another hostage.”
“Yes.”
“Where is your brother?”
“Military base in Germany.”
“Safe?”
“As far as I know.”
Ortiz entered.
“We verified Hannah’s claim.”
Richard looked at her.
“Conrad confessed.”
Richard laughed.
“Of course he did after getting caught.”
Ortiz continued.
“Dr. Ross confirmed the sedative dose would have been within normal pediatric limits.”
“That does not make secret medication acceptable.”
“No.”
Hannah nodded.
“I know.”
Richard looked at her.
“But you saved Ethan.”
She cried.
“I was trying.”
He nodded.
“I know that too.”
The contradiction remained.
Trust had become a thing with fractures.
Not necessarily destroyed.
But never invisible again.
Later that evening, Richard found Conrad sitting alone in the library.
The old man looked tired.
“You used Hannah.”
Conrad nodded.
“Yes.”
“You involved a maid because you knew Alexander ignored staff.”
“Yes.”
“You gave her sedatives.”
“Yes.”
Richard sat across from him.
“Do you understand what you became?”
Conrad looked at him.
“What?”
“You became Alexander with better intentions.”
The words landed.
Conrad closed his eyes.
Richard continued.
“You moved people around like pieces.”
“You decided which truths they could handle.”
“You decided which risks were acceptable.”
“You lied because you believed the outcome justified it.”
Conrad nodded slowly.
“You’re right.”
Richard stared.
“No defense?”
“No.”
“I spent nine years preparing one.”
“I no longer believe it.”
Richard looked away.
Conrad whispered.
“I lost my wife because I thought I could manage danger quietly.”
“I lost you because I repeated the same mistake.”
Richard’s anger softened into grief.
“You missed nine years.”
“I know.”
“Ethan’s birth.”
“Yes.”
“My wedding.”
“Yes.”
“Julian’s collapse.”
“Yes.”
Conrad’s eyes filled.
“I watched from a distance and told myself it was sacrifice.”
“It was fear.”
Richard said nothing.
Then Conrad placed a small envelope on the table.
“What?”
“DNA results.”
Richard frowned.
“Whose?”
“Mine and Julian’s.”
Richard already knew Alexander was Julian’s biological father.
Conrad shook his head.
“No.”
“That was Alexander’s last lie.”
Richard stared.
“What?”
Conrad slid the paper forward.
Julian was Conrad’s biological son.
99.99 percent probability.
Richard read it.
His pulse quickened.
“But you said—”
“I believed Evelyn.”
Conrad whispered.
“She thought Alexander was the father.”
“She was wrong.”
Richard sat back.
Alexander had lied again.
He told Vanessa.
He told Julian.
He told Conrad.
He weaponized uncertainty.
“Then Ethan is Julian’s biological son.”
“Yes.”
“But Alexander is not related to him.”
“Correct.”
Richard laughed.
The old man’s obsession with bloodline had been built on another false assumption.
“Does Alexander know?”
“No.”
Richard smiled for the first time in days.
“Good.”
Ortiz entered hurriedly.
“That smile is about to disappear.”
Richard looked at her.
“What happened?”
“Alexander was transferred to federal custody thirty minutes ago.”
“Yes?”
“The convoy was attacked.”
Richard stood.
“What?”
“Two vehicles.”
“Professional team.”
“Three officers injured.”
Conrad went pale.
“Alexander escaped?”
Ortiz nodded.
Richard’s stomach dropped.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Alexander’s voice.
“You really thought a cell could hold me?”
Richard looked at Conrad.
“Where are you?”
Alexander laughed.
“Come to the ballroom.”
Richard froze.
He turned toward the doorway.
The ballroom was two corridors away.
Alexander whispered.
“I told you this would end where it began.”
The line disconnected.
Richard ran.
Police followed.
He reached the ballroom.
The chandeliers were off.
Only work lights illuminated the damaged wall.
A chair sat in the center.
Someone was tied to it.
Vanessa.
Richard stopped.
Her mouth was taped.
A device was strapped to her chest.
Wires.
A digital timer.
04:58.
04:57.
04:56.
Richard’s blood turned cold.
Alexander’s voice came through the ballroom speakers.
“Hello, Richard.”
Vanessa shook her head violently.
Richard looked around.
“Where are you?”
Alexander answered.
May you like
“Behind the wall.”
