Chapter 18 - The False Victory

Roman did not run.

That was exactly what Silas’s final scheme expected.

If Roman fled with Gabriel, Kestrel could claim kidnapping and obstruction.

If Sophia resisted violently, they could question her fitness again.

So Roman stood on the medical complex steps as the enforcement officers arrived.

Mara walked forward with her hands visible.

“I represent Sophia Bennett.”

The lead officer showed the order.

Mara examined it.

“This is fraudulent.”

“It bears Judge Bell’s verified electronic signature.”

“Bell is under federal investigation.”

“The order remains active until another judge vacates it.”

Sophia held Gabriel.

“You are not taking my baby.”

The officer’s expression softened.

“Ma’am, we are not here to remove your child.”

Roman watched carefully.

The officer continued.

“We are here to notify you that Kestrel Family Management has been appointed temporary financial fiduciary.”

Sophia exhaled.

Mara did not.

“What authority does Kestrel have over custody?”

“None under this order.”

Mara read again.

Then she smiled.

Silas had rushed.

He had failed to include the child-protection language necessary to seize Gabriel.

Roman felt the first genuine relief in days.

Gabriel was safe.

At least physically.

But Kestrel now controlled Vincent’s voting share.

Mason searched company filings.

“The registered managing director is Elaine Mercer.”

Vincent’s alias had been Daniel Mercer.

Roman frowned.

“Relation?”

Mason searched deeper.

“Mother.”

Sophia looked up.

“Whose mother?”

Mason turned the screen.

“Jonah Vale’s.”

Mara went completely still.

“My mother’s name was Elaine Vale.”

“She died eight years ago.”

Mason shook his head.

“The woman listed here uses Elaine Mercer.”

“Same birth date.”

“Same Social Security history until twelve years ago.”

Mara stared at him.

“No.”

Roman understood before she did.

Mara’s mother had not died.

She had disappeared.

Just like Vincent.

They traced Kestrel’s registered address to a small law office in Wisconsin.

Roman, Sophia, Mara, and federal investigators traveled there that afternoon.

An elderly woman sat behind the desk.

Mara stopped in the doorway.

Her knees nearly gave out.

“Mom.”

Elaine Vale looked up.

For a moment, she simply stared.

Then she began to cry.

Mara crossed the room.

The reunion lasted less than a minute before anger arrived.

“You let me bury you.”

Elaine held her daughter’s face.

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

Mara stepped away.

“That sentence is a disease in this family.”

Roman understood exactly what she meant.

Elaine explained.

After Jonah’s death, she had begun asking questions.

Silas threatened Mara.

So Elaine accepted money, changed her identity, and disappeared.

But she never stopped collecting evidence.

Three years earlier, she learned Vincent was alive.

They began working together.

Kestrel was not Silas’s company.

Vincent had created it months earlier as an emergency trust shield.

Silas discovered its existence and tried to redirect it using Bell’s order.

Mara looked confused.

“Then why is my signature on the incorporation?”

Elaine smiled weakly.

“Because Jonah’s will named you successor trustee.”

Mara stared at her.

“What?”

Elaine opened a safe.

Inside was Jonah Vale’s original will.

He had created Kestrel as a dormant fiduciary vehicle before his death.

If Callaway trust corruption was ever exposed, Kestrel could temporarily hold disputed assets until an independent court review.

Silas thought he had stolen Gabriel’s inheritance.

Instead, he had accidentally transferred it into the one structure Jonah had designed to keep it away from him.

Roman laughed.

He could not help it.

After eleven years, Jonah had finally beaten Silas.

Sophia smiled for the first time since the stairwell.

Then Elaine’s phone rang.

Her smile vanished.

She handed it to Roman.

Vincent’s attorney was calling.

The federal prosecutor had offered Vincent a deal.

Full cooperation.

Reduced charges.

No murder charge.

But there was one condition.

Vincent had to testify publicly.

Everything would come out.

Jonah.

Dominic.

Silas.

The fake death.

The hidden identities.

And the years Vincent spent living as Daniel Mercer.

Sophia looked at Gabriel.

Roman asked, “What is Vincent going to do?”

May you like

The attorney answered.

“He already accepted.”
