Chapter 17 - Roman’s Counterattack

Silas raised a hand.
“No one moves.”
Sophia stood in front of her mother.
Mara shielded her son.
Gabriel began crying.
Silas looked toward the baby.
“Give him to me.”
Sophia laughed once.
“No.”
“You think Roman is coming to save you?”
“I know he is.”
Silas’s expression twisted.
“That confidence is exactly what destroyed his father.”
A sound came from the stairwell.
Then another.
Heavy footsteps.
Silas turned.
Roman entered the corridor with Mason, Davis, and federal agents behind him.
Silas stared.
Roman stopped ten feet away.
“You keep using families as locks.”
Silas said nothing.
Roman continued.
“So I brought the keys.”
Federal agents moved forward.
Silas’s men lowered their weapons.
Mara ran to her son.
Sophia’s mother pulled her into an embrace.
Roman went directly to Gabriel.
He looked at the infant.
Then at Sophia.
“You okay?”
Sophia nodded.
“You?”
“Ask me after this is over.”
An agent placed Silas in handcuffs.
Silas did not resist.
He smiled at Roman.
“You still don’t understand.”
Roman looked at him.
“The archive is already gone.”
Mason raised a tablet.
“No.”
Silas’s smile disappeared.
Mason had spent the previous six hours copying every server tied to Silas’s private medical complex.
Financial ledgers.
Court payments.
Hospital access logs.
Blackmail files.
Surveillance photographs.
Names.
Dates.
Everything.
Silas had spent decades building leverage.
Now that leverage belonged to federal investigators.
Roman looked at him.
“You taught me something.”
Silas said nothing.
“Never keep all your secrets in one building.”
Agents led him away.
Sophia thought the nightmare had ended.
Then Mara opened one of the basement archive rooms.
Inside were hundreds of paper files.
She searched until she found Jonah’s name.
The folder contained his original notes.
At the bottom was a sealed envelope.
FOR MARA.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Jonah had written the letter days before his death.
Mara read silently.
Then began crying.
Roman waited.
She handed him the final page.
Jonah had known he was in danger.
He had also suspected Vincent would be blamed if anything happened.
One paragraph changed everything.
Vincent found me after the argument with Dominic.
He wants me to go to federal investigators tonight.
I told him I would.
If anything happens to me before then, Vincent tried to help me.
Do not let them turn him into the villain.
Mara covered her face.
For twelve years, she had believed Vincent helped destroy her brother.
Jonah’s own words said otherwise.
Roman photographed every page.
He sent them to Vincent’s attorney immediately.
Sophia looked at Roman.
“Will it clear him?”
“Not completely.”
“He still helped with the cover-up afterward.”
“But it proves he was trying to help Jonah before he died.”
That mattered.
Intent would not erase Vincent’s actions.
But it could change how prosecutors viewed them.
Davis approached Roman.
“My daughter is safe.”
Roman nodded.
“Good.”
“I don’t expect my job back.”
“You’re not getting it.”
Davis almost smiled.
“I figured.”
Roman looked at him.
“But tell the truth when they question you.”
“I will.”
Sophia carried Gabriel toward the elevator.
For the first time since leaving the hospital, there were no footsteps chasing her.
No camera pointed through a window.
No anonymous message waiting on her phone.
Outside, dawn was beginning.
Roman stood beside her.
“It’s over.”
Sophia looked at him.
“No.”
Roman followed her gaze.
News alerts were spreading across every screen.
Judge Bell had been detained.
Silas was in federal custody.
Callaway Foundation assets had been frozen.
But another headline appeared beneath them.
EMERGENCY ORDER GRANTS TEMPORARY CONTROL OF CALLAWAY INFANT TRUST TO PRIVATE FIDUCIARY.
Mara went pale.
“That order was filed twelve minutes before Bell was detained.”
Roman read the fiduciary’s name.
KESTREL FAMILY MANAGEMENT.
Mason searched it.
His expression changed.
“Kestrel was incorporated yesterday.”
“By whom?”
Mason turned the screen.
Mara stared.
Her own electronic signature appeared on the incorporation documents.
Someone had used her identity.
Silas had built one final trap.
Even in custody, he had transferred control of Gabriel’s inheritance to a company designed to look independent.
And according to the order, Kestrel’s representative was authorized to take immediate protective possession of assets connected to the minor heir.
Sophia looked down at Gabriel.
“Assets?”
Mara’s face tightened.
“In the worst possible interpretation.”
“The court may consider Gabriel himself part of the protective proceeding.”
Roman’s phone rang.
A court officer spoke.
“Mr. Callaway.”
“We have an enforcement team en route.”
May you like
Roman looked toward the road.
Two government vehicles were already approaching.
