Chapter 12 - The Woman in the Background

Mason enlarged the photograph of Davis’s daughter until the pixels blurred.

Roman stood behind him.

Sophia sat nearby with Gabriel.

Davis paced the room.

“Anything?”

Mason pointed toward a mirror behind the chair.

“There.”

A reflection showed part of the person holding the camera.

A woman.

Dark coat.

Blond hair.

Roman leaned closer.

Something about the outline was familiar.

Sophia saw it first.

“She was at the courthouse.”

Roman looked at her.

“Where?”

“Behind Silas.”

“Second row.”

Roman pulled up courthouse security footage.

They found the woman entering twenty minutes before the hearing.

She never spoke to Silas.

But she entered using credentials issued to Mara Keene’s law firm.

Roman went still.

Mara had represented him for twelve years.

Mason searched deeper.

The credential belonged to Mara personally.

Sophia watched Roman’s face.

“You think your attorney is involved.”

“I think I’m tired of assuming anyone isn’t.”

Roman called Mara.

No answer.

He called her office.

“She left an hour ago.”

“Destination?”

“She didn’t say.”

Mason accessed parking footage.

Mara’s car left downtown and headed west.

Davis leaned over the screen.

“The building where my daughter is being held is near freight tracks.”

“There are tracks west of the river.”

They traced traffic cameras.

Mara’s car disappeared near an old private medical complex once owned by Callaway Health Partners.

Roman remembered the property.

It had closed six years earlier after Silas arranged its sale.

Sophia looked at him.

“Who bought it?”

Roman searched the record.

A shell company.

Vale Meridian Holdings.

Jonah Vale’s surname.

That was not coincidence.

They arrived just after ten.

Roman brought a small team.

Inside the medical complex, they found Davis’s daughter in a former physical therapy room.

She was frightened but unharmed.

Davis ran to her.

She clung to him.

Roman searched the corridors.

At the end of one hallway, he found Mara.

She stood alone in a room filled with storage boxes.

“You.”

Mara did not run.

“I wondered how long it would take.”

Roman’s voice hardened.

“You kidnapped Davis’s daughter.”

“No.”

“I moved her.”

“From whom?”

“Silas.”

Davis entered behind Roman.

“My daughter said you tied her up.”

Mara looked ashamed.

“I needed the photograph to look real.”

Davis lunged forward.

Roman stopped him.

“Talk.”

Mara removed a folder from one of the boxes.

“My name was not always Mara Keene.”

Roman waited.

She handed him a birth certificate.

MARA VALE.

Roman stared at her.

“Jonah was my brother.”

The room became silent.

Mara continued.

“I was nineteen when he disappeared.”

“Your family told us he went overseas.”

“My mother never believed it.”

“She spent years searching.”

“Then she died.”

“So you joined the only family that knew the truth.”

Roman looked around the boxes.

“You’ve been collecting evidence.”

“For twelve years.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you worshiped your father.”

Roman flinched.

Mara did not apologize.

“You built half your public identity around Dominic Callaway’s legacy.”

“I had no reason to believe you would destroy him to protect the truth.”

“So you used me.”

“Yes.”

“And Davis?”

“I learned Silas had his daughter moved here.”

“I reached her first.”

“Why fake the kidnapping?”

“To force Davis to bring the ledger without Silas learning I had turned him.”

Roman stared.

“You could have told me.”

Mara’s eyes filled with anger.

“Jonah told your father the truth.”

“He died.”

“Vincent knew the truth.”

“He became a ghost.”

“Your mother knew part of it.”

“She spent the rest of her life terrified.”

“Forgive me if honesty did not seem like a successful Callaway survival strategy.”

Sophia stepped into the room.

“What does any of this have to do with Gabriel?”

Mara looked at the baby.

“Everything.”

She opened another box.

Inside were copied foundation records.

“Jonah discovered that Silas was not working alone.”

Roman’s stomach tightened.

“Who?”

Mara placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Dominic Callaway.

Silas.

And a third man.

Roman recognized him.

Everyone in Chicago did.

Judge Harrison Bell.

The same judge scheduled to decide Gabriel’s guardianship hearing the next morning.
