Chapter 14 - The Betrayal

Roman pulled the fire alarm.

Nothing happened.

The system had been disabled.

He wrapped his jacket around his hand and searched for another exit.

The archive room had been built like a vault.

Concrete walls.

Steel door.

No windows.

Smoke thickened near the ceiling.

Roman called Mason.

No signal.

Then his phone vibrated.

One message came through.

MARA KEENE.

I’M SORRY.

Roman stared at the screen.

A second message arrived.

I GAVE SILAS THE ACCESS CODE.

Roman felt something colder than anger.

Mara had betrayed him.

At the courthouse, Sophia sat across from Silas’s attorneys.

Judge Bell entered at nine exactly.

Mara’s chair beside Sophia remained empty.

Sophia checked her phone.

No answer.

Judge Bell began.

“Given the unusual circumstances, this court will determine whether temporary protective guardianship is necessary.”

Sophia stood.

“Your Honor, before you proceed, I request reassignment.”

Bell frowned.

“On what grounds?”

Sophia looked directly at him.

“Financial conflict.”

The courtroom murmured.

Bell’s face hardened.

“Sit down.”

Sophia did not.

“My counsel obtained records indicating you received undisclosed payments from entities controlled by Silas Callaway.”

Bell struck his gavel.

“Ms. Bennett, sit down.”

Silas turned slowly toward her.

For the first time, Sophia saw uncertainty in his face.

Good.

She continued.

“If you remove my child after hearing that allegation, every reporter outside this room is going to ask why.”

Bell ordered the courtroom cleared.

The reporters protested.

Sophia lifted her voice.

“My son’s name is Gabriel Bennett.”

“I am his mother.”

“I am not abandoning him.”

“I am not unstable.”

“I am being threatened because powerful men want what he inherited.”

Phones were already recording.

Bell shouted for deputies.

The hearing dissolved into chaos.

Back beneath the Callaway Club, Roman found a maintenance grate near the floor.

He kicked it loose.

Behind it ran a narrow electrical shaft.

He crawled inside as smoke filled the vault.

Before leaving, he grabbed three original files and stuffed them under his shirt.

He emerged into a service corridor just as sprinklers finally activated in the upper building.

Outside, Mason reached him.

“What happened?”

“Mara.”

Mason looked confused.

“She gave Silas the code.”

Roman checked his phone.

Another message from Mara appeared.

This one contained coordinates.

And four words.

HE HAS SOPHIA’S MOTHER.

Roman stopped.

Sophia had never mentioned her mother.

When Roman called her, she answered from the courthouse hallway.

“I need you to leave now.”

“What happened?”

“Mara gave Silas the vault.”

Silence.

Roman continued.

“He has your mother.”

Sophia’s breathing changed.

“My mother is in Arizona.”

“Not anymore.”

Roman heard the fear return.

Sophia whispered.

“She doesn’t even know about Gabriel.”

Roman looked at Mara’s coordinates.

An industrial address near the lake.

“Go with Mason.”

“Roman.”

“Do not go alone.”

Sophia’s voice broke.

“He’ll hurt her.”

“That is what he wants you to think.”

“No.”

Sophia looked through the courthouse doors.

Silas was gone.

His lawyers were gone too.

“He wanted the hearing to fail.”

Roman understood.

The guardianship petition had only been pressure.

The real target was still Sophia.

Mara’s final message arrived.

I HAD NO CHOICE.

HE KNOWS WHERE MY SON IS.

Roman stared at it.

Mara had a son.

Another secret.

Another hostage.

Silas had built an empire by turning love into leverage.

Roman looked at the coordinates.

This had stopped being about one trust.

It was about a system Silas had used for decades.

And the only way to defeat it was to make sure no hostage remained useful.

Roman called Vincent’s federal attorney.

“I need you to arrange something.”

“What?”

“Get Vincent in front of a camera.”

“Roman, he’s in custody.”

“Good.”

“No one can reach him there.”

May you like

Roman looked toward the skyline.

“Tell him it’s time to stop being dead.”
