Chapter 9 - THE PHOTOGRAPH

For three hours, Amelia believed the photograph might destroy the memory of her marriage.
Daniel stood outside a roadside motel wearing the navy coat she had given him for Christmas.
The woman beside him appeared to be in her thirties.
Dark hair.
Pregnant.
Daniel’s hand rested on her shoulder.
Joanna had chosen the photograph carefully.
There was enough intimacy to suggest betrayal.
Not enough context to prove anything.
Amelia almost called Joanna.
She stopped herself.
Instead, she sent the image to Victor.
His reply came four minutes later.
I know her.
Her name was Elena Cruz.
She worked for your mother.
Amelia called immediately.
“What did she do?”
“Bookkeeping.”
“For Mom?”
“For the small rental properties your mother owned.”
“What was Daniel doing with her?”
“I don’t know, but I can find out.”
Rachel found Elena first.
She lived in Phoenix.
They arranged a video call.
The moment Elena saw Amelia, she began crying.
“I wondered if you would ever know.”
“Know what?”
Elena took a long breath.
“Your sister used your mother’s rental accounts to hide personal expenses.”
“How much?”
“More than one hundred thousand dollars before your mother became sick.”
Amelia felt the room tilt.
“Why didn’t you report it?”
“I tried.”
“To whom?”
“Daniel.”
The motel photograph suddenly changed meaning.
Elena had been hiding from Joanna.
Not sleeping with Daniel.
“Why were you at a motel?”
“Daniel paid for a room because I was scared.”
“Of Joanna?”
Elena looked away.
“She told me if I interfered, she would tell immigration authorities my husband had used false documents years earlier.”
“Was that true?”
“No.
But at the time we were trying to finalize his residency.
I was terrified.”
“What did you give Daniel?”
“Copies of everything.”
“Do you still have them?”
Elena nodded.
Amelia’s heart pounded.
“Where?”
“In a safety deposit box.”
Rachel leaned closer to the screen.
“What exactly is inside?”
“Bank statements.
Copies of checks.
Emails.
And one audio recording.”
Amelia stared.
“Recording of whom?”
“Joanna and Daniel.”
The call ended with Elena promising to send the documents through Rachel.
Two days later, an encrypted file arrived.
Amelia sat in Rachel’s office while the audio began.
Daniel’s voice came first.
“You forged the amendment.”
Joanna answered.
“You can’t prove that.”
“I can prove enough.”
“You tell Amelia and you destroy her.”
“No.
You destroy yourself.”
Then Joanna laughed.
“You still don’t understand.
Amelia will always choose peace over conflict.
Especially if I remind her what I did after you’re gone.”
Daniel went silent.
When he spoke again, his voice was colder.
“What does that mean?”
Joanna answered.
“Exactly what you think it means.”
The recording ended there.
Rachel immediately replayed the last twenty seconds.
Amelia felt ice move through her body.
May you like
After you’re gone.
The conversation occurred nine days before Daniel died.
