Chapter 16 - THE EARLY CLUE
Amelia returned to the first night.
The night police stood in her living room.
The night Joanna had terrified Maisie.
There was one detail she had almost forgotten.
Joanna had been furious about the hidden spare key.
Why?
The key opened Joanna’s apartment.
Not Amelia’s home.
Joanna had left it in Amelia’s kitchen months earlier.
Maisie hid it after Joanna threatened the basement.
At the time, it seemed meaningless.
Now Amelia wondered why Joanna reacted strongly enough to call police over a key.
She asked Maisie carefully.
“Why did you hide Aunt Joanna’s key?”
“Because I didn’t want her to go get the box.”
Amelia’s heart skipped.
“What box?”
“The red one.”
“What red one?”
Maisie frowned.
“She kept saying she needed the key because she had to get her red box before you came home.”
Amelia sat straighter.
“Did she say what was inside?”
“No.”
“Where did she keep it?”
“In the cabinet near her bedroom.”
Amelia immediately called Rachel.
Because Joanna’s accounts were under investigation, a search warrant required more than curiosity.
But Carla’s testimony, the trust evidence, and documentation of possible stolen records were enough for investigators to request one.
Three days later, officers searched Joanna’s apartment.
The red box was still there.
Inside were original documents.
Their mother’s estate amendment.
The fraudulent one.
The notary section was attached to a different page.
There were blank sheets containing their mother’s genuine signature.
Photocopies of Amelia’s identification.
Old bank authorization forms.
And Daniel’s handwritten notes.
The most important document was folded at the bottom.
It was the original trust instrument.
The real one.
Naming Amelia as trustee.
The paper Joanna had spent eight years pretending did not exist.
There was also cash.

And a ledger.
Joanna had tracked everything.
Money taken.
Money spent.
Money expected from Amelia.
Beside several entries were notes.
A birthday gift to Joanna.
Car insurance.
Rent.
Vacation.
Each entry included one column labeled REASON.
Some reasons were ordinary.
Job loss.
Emergency.
Medical.
Then Amelia saw another column.
LEVERAGE.
Beside one payment was written Daniel guilt.
Beside another was Mom guilt.
Beside another was Maisie needs stability.
Amelia stared at the words.
Joanna had not stumbled into dependence.
She had designed it.
But the final page was worse.
At the top Joanna had written a calculation.
