Chapter 17 - AMELIA’S COUNTERATTACK

Rachel filed an amended civil complaint.

The bank froze additional assets.

Prosecutors opened a financial fraud investigation.

The probate court suspended every remaining authority Joanna claimed.

Amelia did one more thing.

She sold the apartment Joanna lived in.

The apartment was in Amelia’s name.

It had always been in Amelia’s name.

Joanna received formal notice according to the lease.

Thirty days.

No screaming.

No surprise visit.

No revenge.

Just paperwork.

Joanna called that evening.

“You’re making me homeless.”

“You have thirty days.”

“I have nowhere to go.”

“You have money.”

“My accounts are frozen.”

“Some are restricted.”

“You know I can’t afford another apartment.”

“You are fifty-one years old.”

Joanna’s breathing changed.

“You promised Mom you would take care of me.”

“No.”

“She told you.”

“She told me to love you.”

“That means the same thing.”

“No.”

Amelia’s voice remained calm.

“It never did.”

Joanna started crying.

This time Amelia did not immediately soften.

“I was there when Daniel died.”

“You were there after he died.”

“I held you.”

“Yes.”

“I helped you eat.”

“Yes.”

“I slept on your couch for weeks.”

“Yes.”

“I took you to appointments.”

“Yes.”

“And none of that matters?”

“It mattered.”

Joanna went silent.

Amelia continued.

“But kindness is not a mortgage.

You do not get to charge interest forever.”

Joanna’s sobbing stopped.

“You sound like him.”

“Daniel?”

“He always thought he was better than me.”

“No.

He knew what you were doing.”

“You think Daniel was a saint?”

“No.”

Amelia looked at Daniel’s photograph across the room.

“He made mistakes.

So did I.”

Joanna laughed bitterly.

“You want the truth?

He paid me because he knew you would choose him over me.”

“I would have chosen honesty.”

“No.

You would have collapsed.”

“That was never your decision to make.”

“It became my decision because everyone else was weak.”

There it was.

The belief beneath Joanna’s entire life.

Control disguised as competence.

Cruelty disguised as strength.

Manipulation disguised as sacrifice.

Amelia spoke slowly.

“You were not the strongest person in our family, Joanna.”

“Really?”

“You were simply the person most willing to use everyone else’s pain.”

Joanna hung up.

Two hours later, Amelia received an email.

No subject.

One attachment.

A scanned letter.

It was written by their mother.

Amelia recognized the handwriting.

The first line read.

Amelia, if Joanna ever tells you she sacrificed everything for me, you need to know what really happened.
