Chapter 8: The Second DNA File

The Villaseñor mansion had never felt colder.
Rain continued tapping against the tall windows while the conference room remained silent after the final recording.
No one spoke.
No one knew what to believe anymore.
Diego stood alone by the window, replaying his father's voice in his mind.
"I'll make the child disappear..."
For years, he had admired Alejandro Villaseñor.
He had built his company following his father's lessons.
He had defended his reputation.
Now every memory felt poisoned.
A gentle knock interrupted his thoughts.
Carlos stepped inside.
"Sir."
"What is it?"
"The forensic team finished examining the library."
"Did they find anything?"
Carlos nodded.
"Not in the library."
He handed Diego a small evidence envelope.
"They found this hidden inside the air vent in your father's study."
Diego carefully opened it.
Inside was a tiny brass key.
A faded paper tag hung from it.
Bank Vault 214
No bank name.
No address.
Only a key.
Early the next morning, Diego and Detective Álvarez visited every private bank Alejandro had ever used.
The first three banks had no record of Vault 214.
The fourth did.
Banco Nacional Privado.
Downtown Mexico City.
The elderly vault manager examined the key.
His expression immediately changed.
"This box hasn't been opened in nearly five years."
"It belongs to my father."
"I know."
He paused.
"But according to our records, there were supposed to be two authorized owners."
Diego frowned.
"Who was the second?"
The manager checked the original paperwork.
Then looked up in confusion.
"That's strange."
"The second name has been removed."
"Removed?"
"It looks like someone physically cut it out of the document."
Diego stared at the file.
Another erased identity.
Another missing name.
Nothing involving his father had ever been simple.
A few minutes later the steel vault door slowly opened.
Inside Box 214 rested only three items.
A sealed manila envelope.
A silver flash drive.
A thick medical file.
Diego immediately reached for the medical file.
The cover read:
CONFIDENTIAL DNA REPORT
Date:
Four years earlier.
His pulse quickened.
This had to be the report Ricardo mentioned.
He opened it carefully.
The first page identified the samples.
Sample A: Diego Villaseñor.
Sample B: Female Infant.
His heart skipped.
He turned the page.
The conclusion had been stamped in bold red letters.
Probability of paternity: 99.9998%.
Valentina.
There was no doubt.
No uncertainty.
She was his daughter.
Diego closed his eyes.
For several seconds he simply stood there.
His daughter.
His little girl.
The child who had smiled at him in the hallway for three years.
The child who had handed him a golden button.
The child he had unknowingly walked past hundreds of times.
A tear rolled silently down his cheek.
Detective Álvarez gently placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Congratulations."
Diego laughed bitterly.
"It feels strange hearing that."
Then he noticed something.
Several pages were missing.
The medical file jumped from Page 6 directly to Page 12.
Someone had removed the middle section.
"What was here?"
The detective examined the torn binding.
"These pages weren't lost."
"They were taken."
Diego looked at the remaining documents.
Another laboratory receipt.
Another patient number.
Then...
One handwritten note clipped to the back.
Compare Sample C before final submission.
Sample C?
He flipped through the folder again.
There was no Sample C.
No explanation.
Nothing.
Only another missing piece.
Across the city, Marisol finally agreed to meet Diego.
Not at the mansion.
Not at his office.
A quiet public park where Valentina loved feeding pigeons.
When Diego arrived, the little girl was laughing as birds fluttered around her tiny feet.
For the first time in days...
He smiled.
Valentina looked up.
"Nice man!"
She ran toward him before Marisol could stop her.
Diego instinctively knelt.
She threw her tiny arms around his neck.
The hug lasted only a few seconds.
Yet it completely shattered him.
He hugged her carefully.
Almost fearfully.
As if he had no right.
"You remembered me."
Valentina nodded seriously.
"You give button."
"I did."
"You nice."
Diego swallowed hard.
"I've missed a lot, haven't I?"
The little girl tilted her head.
"I don't know."
Neither did he.
Marisol watched quietly.
Part of her wanted to pull Valentina away.
Another part knew...
This little girl had always felt safe around Diego.
Even before either of them knew why.
They sat together on a park bench while Valentina chased butterflies nearby.
Diego handed Marisol the DNA report.
She looked at it silently.
Then folded it without reading.
"I never doubted."
"I know."
"I didn't need a laboratory to tell me who her father was."
Diego nodded.
"I'm sorry."
She looked at him.
"For what?"
"For four birthdays."
"For every first word."
"For every fever."
"For every night she asked why other children had fathers."
His voice cracked.
"I wasn't there."
Marisol remained quiet.
"You didn't choose that."
"No."
"You were robbed of it."
Diego shook his head.
"That doesn't make it hurt less."
A long silence settled between them.
Finally Marisol spoke.
"She doesn't need a billionaire."
Diego looked at her.
"She needs someone who stays."
"I will."
"You can't promise that after one DNA report."
"I'm not promising because of the report."
He watched Valentina laugh among the pigeons.
"I'm promising because she's my daughter."
Far across the park...
A man lowered his camera.
Click.
Another photograph.
Another.
Another.
Inside the telephoto lens appeared Diego.
Marisol.
Valentina.
Together.
Like a family.
The photographer immediately sent the images.
Within seconds his phone vibrated.
One message.
Continue surveillance. Do not intervene yet.
Back at the ranch outside Toluca...
Ricardo Castillo studied the photographs.
He smiled faintly.
"So..."
"They finally met as father and daughter."
The younger man beside him frowned.
"Shouldn't we stop this now?"
Ricardo shook his head.
"No."
"They're already learning too much."
"Not enough."
He opened another locked drawer.
Inside rested an old hospital bracelet.
Tiny.
Pink.
Newborn size.
Attached to it was a faded label.
Baby Girl B
The younger man stared.
"I thought there was only one baby."
Ricardo smiled without humor.
"There were two."
He placed the bracelet beside another DNA folder.
Unlike Diego's report...
This file remained completely intact.
Across the cover were printed six chilling words.
CONFIDENTIAL – NEVER RELEASE TO DIEGO
Ricardo tapped the folder lightly.
"Alejandro believed destroying one family secret would save his empire."
He looked toward the storm gathering outside.
"He never realized..."
"...the real secret was born ten minutes after Valentina."
The younger man whispered,
"So Sample C..."
Ricardo nodded.
"...is still alive."
He closed the folder.
May you like
"And when Diego discovers who Sample C really is..."
"...everything he believes about the Villaseñor family will collapse."
