Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Locked Door

Diego arrived at the Villaseñor mansion in less than twenty minutes.

The front gates had already been sealed.

Two police vehicles stood in the circular driveway, their flashing lights reflecting across the wet marble.

Carlos was waiting at the entrance.

His face was tense.

"You've seen the footage?"

"Only enough to know I need to see it myself."

Carlos nodded and led him into the security room.

Three monitors replayed recordings from the previous night.

One officer paused the video.

"Here."

The timestamp read 11:42 PM.

The library hallway was empty.

Three minutes later, Paulina appeared.

She looked over both shoulders before removing a small silver key from her pocket.

She unlocked the library door.

Entered for less than thirty seconds.

Then walked away.

She never looked at the camera.

Exactly three minutes after she disappeared...

The hooded intruder climbed through the garden window.

He walked directly into the library.

Straight to the cabinet.

He opened it without searching.

Took the folder.

And escaped.

No hesitation.

No mistakes.

He knew precisely where to go.

Diego replayed the footage again.

Then again.

Finally, he looked at Carlos.

"Where is she?"

Carlos hesitated.

"In her room."

"Has she tried to leave?"

"No."

"Did she explain this?"

"She insists she was looking for a wedding guest list."

Diego gave a humorless laugh.

"In the library."

"Yes, sir."

Paulina stood by the bedroom window when Diego entered.

She did not turn around.

"You've seen it."

"Yes."

She slowly faced him.

"You think I helped that man."

"I know you unlocked the door."

She folded her arms.

"I was looking for something."

"What?"

She remained silent.

Diego placed the laptop on the table and replayed the footage.

"You have one opportunity to tell me the truth."

"I already did."

"No."

His voice remained calm.

"You lied."

Paulina watched herself on the screen.

Then sighed.

"I wasn't helping a thief."

"Then explain."

She looked away.

"I was looking for letters."

"What letters?"

"The ones your father hid."

Diego narrowed his eyes.

"How did you know they existed?"

Silence.

"Paulina."

"I found one years ago."

His heartbeat slowed.

"Years ago?"

She nodded reluctantly.

"Before I ever met you."

The room became still.

"You knew my father."

"I met him once."

"Liar."

She flinched.

"I met him several times."

Diego stared at her.

"How?"

Paulina closed her eyes.

"When I was twenty-four, I worked for a consulting firm."

"What kind of consulting?"

"Crisis management."

Diego suddenly remembered the bank transfer Marisol had found.

Five years ago.

Alejandro Villaseñor.

Paulina Robles.

Nothing about meeting him had been accidental.

"My father hired you."

"Yes."

"For what?"

She swallowed.

"To protect your family's reputation."

"From what?"

She looked directly into his eyes.

"From Marisol."

The confession hit Diego harder than he expected.

"You expect me to believe my father hired a twenty-four-year-old consultant to destroy someone's life?"

"I wasn't supposed to destroy her."

"What were you supposed to do?"

"Find her."

"And?"

"Convince her to leave Mexico."

Diego laughed bitterly.

"You failed."

"Yes."

"So Father found another way."

Paulina lowered her head.

"I didn't know everything."

"You knew enough."

"I knew he was desperate."

She stepped closer.

"When I realized she was pregnant, I quit."

Diego searched her face.

For the first time...

He wasn't sure whether she was telling the truth.

"You quit."

"Yes."

"Then why did you come back into my life?"

Paulina looked exhausted.

"Because two years later..."

She hesitated.

"...your father called me again."

"What did he offer?"

She whispered,

"Everything."

Across the city, Marisol tucked Valentina into bed.

The little girl yawned and hugged her stuffed rabbit.

"Mama?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Nice man sad."

Marisol smiled sadly.

"You mean Mr. Diego?"

Valentina nodded.

"He lonely."

Marisol brushed a curl away from her daughter's forehead.

"He has a lot to think about."

Valentina thought for a moment.

"Can he have rabbit?"

Marisol laughed softly despite everything.

"No."

"Half rabbit?"

"You can't split a rabbit."

The little girl giggled.

Then became serious again.

"He smile at me."

"I know."

"He nice."

Marisol kissed her forehead.

"Go to sleep."

After Valentina drifted off, Marisol quietly closed the bedroom door.

Her phone vibrated.

Lucía.

"I found something."

"What?"

"The man standing beside Alejandro in that hospital photo."

Marisol held her breath.

"Who is he?"

"I finally have a name."

"Tell me."

Lucía's voice dropped to a whisper.

"His name is Ricardo Castillo."

Marisol's eyes widened.

"The risk consultant?"

"You know him?"

"No..."

She suddenly remembered Diego mentioning those initials.

R.C.

Ricardo Castillo.

Everything connected.

Lucía continued.

"He wasn't just a consultant."

"What was he?"

"He used to work for military intelligence."

Marisol froze.

"He specialized in surveillance."

A cold wave swept over her.

"So Alejandro hired someone trained to track people."

"Yes."

"And I think..."

Lucía hesitated.

"...he's still alive."

Back at the mansion, Diego sat across from Paulina.

Neither had spoken for several minutes.

Finally, he broke the silence.

"My father promised you everything."

She nodded.

"He said if I helped keep the family stable, one day I would become your wife."

Diego stared at her.

"You built this relationship on his instructions?"

Her eyes filled with tears.

"At first."

"At first?"

"I was supposed to meet you at charity events."

She smiled bitterly.

"Accidentally."

"The dinners."

"Planned."

"The vacations."

"Planned."

"Our first date?"

She nodded.

"Also planned."

Diego slowly stood.

"So every memory..."

"Not every memory."

Paulina's voice cracked.

"I didn't expect to fall in love with you."

He said nothing.

"I know you don't believe me."

"I don't."

"I deserve that."

She wiped away a tear.

"But I stopped following Alejandro's orders a long time ago."

"Then why unlock the library?"

"Because someone else was searching for those letters."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

She shook her head.

"But Alejandro once told me something."

Diego waited.

"He said..."

She swallowed hard.

"'If I die before everything is cleaned up... someone else will finish the job.'"

A knock interrupted them.

Carlos entered without waiting.

"Sir..."

"What is it?"

"We found something in Miss Paulina's car."

Paulina looked confused.

"My car?"

Carlos nodded.

"There was a hidden compartment beneath the trunk lining."

Diego turned slowly toward her.

"I've never hidden anything in my car."

Carlos handed Diego a transparent evidence bag.

Inside was a black USB flash drive.

No label.

No markings.

Paulina stared at it.

"I've never seen that."

Diego looked at her carefully.

He could usually tell when people lied.

This time...

She looked genuinely shocked.

Carlos continued.

"The police checked the file names."

Diego's heart tightened.

"What files?"

Carlos swallowed.

"There are thirty-seven video recordings."

Diego's pulse quickened.

"The surveillance videos?"

"No, sir."

Carlos's voice became almost inaudible.

"They're recordings made inside this mansion..."

"...including conversations that happened in your father's private study over the last five years."

Every person in the room fell silent.

Someone had secretly recorded Alejandro Villaseñor.

And if those recordings still existed...

Then the dead billionaire himself might finally reveal the truth.

But none of them noticed the tiny blinking light hidden inside the smoke detector above the bedroom door.

May you like

Someone else...

Was listening to every word they said.
