Chapter 13: The Confession Alejandro Never Wanted Found

The living room fell into complete silence.

Rain tapped softly against the windows of the small house in Puebla.

Ricardo Castillo stood in handcuffs between two police officers.

No one spoke.

No one even seemed to breathe.

Finally, Diego broke the silence.

"You said there was never a second baby."

Ricardo nodded.

"Correct."

Diego took one slow step forward.

"Then explain the nursery records."

"They were altered."

"The hospital bracelet?"

"Manufactured."

"The adoption application?"

"A legal fabrication."

Detective Daniel Álvarez frowned.

"You forged government documents?"

Ricardo looked at him.

"No."

"I followed orders."

"Whose?"

"You already know."

Alejandro Villaseñor.

Daniel opened his notebook.

"Start from the beginning."

Ricardo closed his eyes.

"The night Valentina was born..."

"...Alejandro believed one thing."

"What?"

"That Diego would never forgive him if he discovered the truth."

Diego laughed bitterly.

"He was right."

"No."

Ricardo answered quietly.

"He was afraid of something much bigger."

Diego's expression hardened.

"What?"

Ricardo looked directly at him.

"He wasn't trying to hide Valentina."

"He was trying to hide himself."

The room became still.

Marisol stared in disbelief.

"What does that mean?"

Ricardo inhaled deeply.

"Alejandro had been diagnosed with terminal heart disease six months before Valentina was born."

Diego frowned.

"I knew that."

"You knew about the diagnosis."

"You didn't know what came next."

Ricardo continued.

"He became obsessed with succession."

"The company?"

"No."

"The bloodline."

Ricardo lowered his voice.

"He wanted absolute certainty that the Villaseñor empire would stay inside what he called..."

"...'the rightful family.'"

Marisol crossed her arms.

"So he destroyed our lives?"

"Yes."

"But not only yours."

Daniel interrupted.

"The fake Baby B..."

"...was created as a diversion."

Ricardo nodded.

"Exactly."

"If anyone ever discovered missing hospital records..."

"They would search for a second child."

"And stop looking somewhere else."

Ricardo looked at Diego.

"Exactly."

Diego stared silently.

"So Isabella..."

"...has nothing to do with my family."

Ricardo hesitated.

"No."

"Then why watch her?"

"Because Alejandro paid for her adoption."

Everyone froze.

"What?"

Ricardo nodded.

"Her biological mother died during childbirth."

"There were no relatives."

"So Alejandro anonymously financed the adoption."

Marisol frowned.

"Why?"

Ricardo answered honestly.

"I never asked."

Daniel wrote quickly.

"So Isabella wasn't hidden."

"No."

"She was protected."

"Yes."

"Then why keep watching her?"

Ricardo looked toward Isabella, who sat quietly beside her grandmother.

"Because Alejandro believed one day someone might mistake her for the missing child."

"So you kept monitoring her."

"Yes."

The entire Baby B mystery...

Had been an elaborate illusion.

A trail designed to consume investigators.

A false maze.

Diego slowly sat down.

Everything he thought he knew had just collapsed.

No second Villaseñor child.

No hidden daughter.

No stolen identity.

Only lies carefully planted over four years.

"So what was Alejandro really hiding?"

Ricardo looked toward the envelope inside his briefcase.

"The answer."

Daniel carefully opened the evidence bag.

Inside rested the envelope labeled:

Open only if Diego learns the truth.

The handwriting belonged unmistakably to Alejandro Villaseñor.

Diego hesitated.

His hands suddenly felt heavy.

Marisol quietly stepped beside him.

"You don't have to do this alone."

He looked at her.

For the first time in years...

He wasn't alone.

He opened the envelope.

Inside were three pages.

Alejandro's signature appeared at the bottom.

Diego began reading aloud.

My son,

If you are reading this, then Ricardo has failed to keep my promise.

You will hate me.

You have every right to.

Everything I did began with fear.

Not hatred.

Fear.

Diego swallowed.

The room remained silent.

He continued.

When Marisol became pregnant, I investigated her family.

Marisol's heart tightened.

During that investigation, I discovered something impossible.

Diego frowned.

The next sentence made everyone freeze.

The woman you loved was never the person she believed herself to be.

Marisol looked up sharply.

"What?"

Diego kept reading.

Someone stole her identity when she was an infant.

The page slipped slightly in his hands.

Marisol shook her head.

"No..."

Alejandro's confession continued.

The Reyes family raised her with love.

But they were not her biological family.

Marisol stared blankly.

"My mother..."

Her voice barely existed.

"...wasn't my mother?"

Ricardo quietly lowered his eyes.

He had known.

Daniel immediately interrupted.

"That's impossible."

Ricardo answered softly.

"No."

"I verified it myself."

Marisol backed away.

"No."

"My mother..."

"She loved me."

Ricardo nodded.

"She did."

"Then why would anyone..."

"No one knows."

Marisol felt tears burning her eyes.

Everything she believed about herself suddenly seemed uncertain.

Diego gently took her hand.

She didn't pull away.

He continued reading.

I considered telling both of you.

But another discovery changed everything.

The room became perfectly still.

The people searching for Marisol's biological family were dangerous.

They believed she had died years earlier.

Marisol whispered,

"What?"

If they learned she was alive...

They would come for her.

Diego slowly lowered the letter.

"What people?"

Ricardo answered.

"I never learned their names."

"I only knew Alejandro feared them."

Daniel frowned.

"My father?"

Ricardo nodded.

"He investigated them."

"So that's why Alejandro hired him."

"Yes."

"Not to hide Marisol..."

"...but to discover who was hunting her."

Silence.

Everything had shifted again.

Alejandro's actions were still cruel.

Still unforgivable.

But suddenly...

Some of them no longer appeared motivated solely by pride.

Something much larger had frightened him.

Diego turned to the final page.

Only one paragraph remained.

If I failed...

Protect Marisol before you protect my company.

Because if the people from thirty-one years ago ever discover she survived...

they will finish what they started.

Signed,

Alejandro Villaseñor

No one spoke.

The confession ended.

But instead of closing the mystery...

It opened an entirely new one.

Marisol's grandmother had never mentioned an adoption.

Her mother had died believing she was an ordinary woman.

Could Alejandro have lied one final time?

Or had he uncovered a secret no one else knew?

Before anyone could speak...

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed instantly.

"What?"

He listened silently.

Then looked toward Diego.

"The forensic lab finished analyzing the documents from Alejandro's vault."

"And?"

Daniel's voice became unusually serious.

"They found fresh fingerprints."

"Whose?"

"Not Alejandro's."

"Not Ricardo's."

"Not yours."

Diego frowned.

"Then whose?"

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

"The prints belong to a woman."

He paused.

"A woman who officially died thirty-one years ago."

Outside...

Thunder rolled across the mountains of Puebla.

Inside the little house...

Every person realized the past was no longer buried.

May you like

Someone who should have been dead...

...had just reached back into the present.
