Chapter 6 - The Empty Coffin
The false funeral had been held at Cedar Ridge Community Church.
A closed casket was buried in the veterans’ cemetery.
Walter told the funeral director that Cassandra’s body had suffered severe medical deterioration.
No viewing was allowed.
The burial permit carried Dr. Keene’s signature.
A court authorized exhumation.
More than fifty reporters gathered beyond the cemetery gates.
Cassandra stood beside General Ward while workers lifted the coffin.
It was too light.
Inside were sandbags, an old Army jacket, and Cassandra’s childhood photographs.
No body.
The uniform jacket carried another soldier’s name inside the collar.
Specialist Aaron Pike.
The man who died in Cassandra’s arms.
Cassandra touched the fabric.
Her breathing changed.
Aaron’s personal effects should have been sent to his parents.
General Ward examined the inventory tag.
The jacket had disappeared from military storage six years earlier.
Someone used the belongings of a dead soldier to construct Cassandra’s funeral.
The theft made the accusation against her even more calculated.
Walter claimed Dr. Keene arranged everything.
Margaret claimed she believed ashes had been placed beneath the sandbags.
Ryan claimed he never saw inside the coffin.
Church footage contradicted him.
A recovered camera file showed Ryan entering the sanctuary alone the night before burial.
He opened the casket.
He placed Cassandra’s photographs inside.
Then he smiled at his phone and said:
“Tomorrow, I become the only heir.”
Cassandra watched the video without speaking.
Her brother had not been pressured.
He had celebrated.
The Army jacket contained one hidden object.
A memory card sewn beneath the shoulder patch.
Investigators expected it to belong to the conspirators.
It belonged to Aaron Pike.
Before their final mission, Aaron had recorded messages for his family.
One file showed Cassandra beside him at the base.
Aaron laughed toward the camera.
“If anyone ever says Sergeant Doyle is not real, ask them who carried my stubborn self three miles after I got shot.”
The recording proved her identity emotionally.
The military records had already proved it legally.
But another file mattered more.
