Chapter 5 - The DNA Trap

The court ordered DNA samples from Cassandra, Walter, and Margaret.
Ryan volunteered first.
He smiled when the technician sealed the swab.
Three days later, the laboratory reported that Cassandra was not biologically related to Walter or Margaret.
News outlets published the result within minutes.
The judge suspended her temporary documents again.
Ryan held a press conference.
“The science proves what our family has said.”
“This woman is not my sister.”
Cassandra sat in Maria’s office staring at the report.
Her hands remained still.
Her mind did not.
She had Walter’s gray eyes.
Margaret’s narrow chin.
The same rare blood disorder carried by women in her mother’s family.
General Ward refused to accept the result.
“Chain of custody.”
Maria nodded.
“The court used a private laboratory selected from an approved list.”
“Who approved it?”
“Judge Calvin Ross.”
The same judge had supervised the property lawsuit before the identity case expanded.
Maria requested the laboratory’s raw data.
The company resisted.
Federal agents obtained a warrant.
The samples had been switched.
Cassandra’s tube contained DNA from an unrelated woman.
Walter’s and Margaret’s samples were genuine.
Security footage showed a laboratory courier opening the evidence container inside a parking garage.
The courier received cash from Dr. Keene.
He was arrested.
Keene disappeared.
The genuine backup swab from Cassandra’s military medical file was tested at an Army laboratory.
The result confirmed a parent-child relationship with both Walter and Margaret.
It also confirmed Ryan was her full biological brother.
The false DNA result became evidence of conspiracy.
Judge Ross claimed he knew nothing about the laboratory interference.
Then investigators found payments from the memorial foundation to his wife’s consulting company.
The judge was removed from the case.
Cassandra’s identity was restored again.
This time, the order prohibited any agency from suspending it without federal review.
Walter’s confidence cracked.
Margaret began asking for separate counsel.
Ryan continued speaking to reporters.
He said Dr. Keene acted alone.
That evening, Maria received a voicemail from Keene.
His voice shook.
“I can prove Cassandra survived.”
“I can also prove her family knew.”
“Meet me at the Cedar Ridge veterans’ cemetery.”
When Cassandra and federal agents arrived, Keene’s car was empty.
Blood marked the driver’s seat.

The trunk contained a folded American flag.
It was the flag presented at Cassandra’s funeral.
