“No.”
“Saving Lauren does not erase it.”
“I know.”
He turned his face toward the wall.
For the first time, Daniel did not ask whether I would forgive him.
He understood that his recovery and my decision were separate things.
Emma visited the next afternoon.
She stood near the bed wearing a yellow hat.
“Daddy has a hospital shirt.”
He smiled weakly.
“Yes.”
“Did Grandpa shave you?”
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
“No.”
“Grandpa hurt me.”
Emma studied him.
“Did you steal?”
“No.”
“He hurt me because I stopped him from hurting Aunt Lauren.”
Emma thought about that.
“Did Aunt Lauren steal?”
“Yes.”
“Why did you help her?”
“Because people still deserve help when they have done wrong.”
Emma looked toward me.
“Is that true?”
“Yes.”
“But helping someone does not mean pretending they never hurt you.”
She nodded.
Then she placed a sticker on Daniel’s blanket.
It showed a smiling dinosaur.
“You can have this.”
Daniel began crying after she left.
The criminal investigation expanded rapidly.
Robert’s confession connected Margaret to Evelyn’s death.
Bank records connected both parents to the stolen retirement funds.
