Chapter 4 - LAUREN’S CONFESSION

Lauren was taken to a private hospital under police guard.
The blood belonged to her.
A deep cut crossed her upper arm.
She claimed Robert attacked her with a kitchen knife after seeing the security video.
Daniel sat across from her in the interview room.
I watched through the glass with Detective Shaw.
Lauren looked smaller without makeup and expensive clothes.
For the first time, she did not look dismissive.
She looked exhausted.
“I stole the bracelet,” she admitted.
“Why?” Daniel asked.
“Because Mom told me Evelyn hid the account passwords inside it.”
“You planted it in Emma’s backpack.”
Lauren closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“You let them shave her head.”
“I did not know Mom would do that.”
“You were sitting in the living room.”
“I thought she would scare her.”
Daniel struck the table with his palm.
“She is three.”
Lauren began crying.
“I know.”
“No.”
“You knew when you watched.”
The detective entered and warned Daniel to remain calm.
Lauren explained that Robert and Margaret had controlled her debts for years.
She became addicted to online gambling after a difficult divorce.
Robert paid the first debts.
Then he began using them as leverage.
He made Lauren sign company documents.
He placed loans in her name.
He warned that she would go to prison if she refused.
Two months earlier, Lauren discovered the trust connected to Emma.
She also found Evelyn’s old letter mentioning box 417.
She needed the bracelet to decode the files.
Her plan was to retrieve the evidence and negotiate immunity.
Margaret noticed the bracelet missing before Lauren could leave.
Lauren panicked.
She placed it in Emma’s backpack.
“Why Emma?”
“Because Mom already disliked her.”
My stomach turned.
Lauren continued.
“She said children who lie must be publicly corrected.”
“She called Dad into the room.”
“I thought he would stop her.”
“He did not.”
Robert watched because the accusation solved two problems.
It distracted the family from the missing bracelet.
It established Emma as a dishonest child.
If the hidden trust became public, Robert could claim Emma had been involved in stealing jewelry and accessing private rooms.
A three-year-old could not defend herself against an adult story.
Lauren placed the key in Emma’s pajamas after the shaving.
She knew I was returning from my trip that afternoon.
She hoped I would take Emma away and eventually find the key.
“Why not call me?” I asked through the open door.
Lauren looked toward me.
“Your phone was monitored through the family account.”
Daniel turned.
“What?”
Robert had installed a management application on every family phone.
He could view calls, messages, locations, and cloud backups.
My business trip had not been private.
The family knew exactly when I would return.
They expected me to arrive after Emma had been cleaned, dressed, and coached.
A winter storm delayed my flight by only thirty minutes.
I arrived while she was still on the balcony.
That small delay exposed everything.
Lauren admitted the family had planned to tell me Emma cut her own hair after being caught with the bracelet.
Margaret would claim the balcony door locked accidentally.
Robert would support the story.
Daniel would be pressured to believe them.
I looked at my husband.
“Would you have?”
His face tightened.
“I do not know.”
That answer hurt more than a lie.
Lauren provided passwords to the hidden accounts.
She also revealed that Robert planned to flee.
He had access to a company plane.
Margaret was already packing.
Police arrived at the Carter home.
The house was empty.
Robert’s car remained in the driveway.
Margaret’s bedroom safe stood open.
May you like
Inside was a passport issued under my name.
The photograph belonged to Margaret.
