Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT OUR HOUSE BURNED

Daniel and I stayed at a secure hotel near the hospital.

Emma was discharged with antibiotic cream, warm clothing, and instructions to avoid infection.

She refused to look in mirrors.

When a nurse offered her a knitted hat, Emma asked whether only bad girls needed to wear it.

The nurse knelt beside her.

“Brave girls wear hats when their heads are cold.”

Emma accepted it.

She slept between Daniel and me that night.

Neither of us slept.

At 3:12 a.m., my phone displayed an alert from our home-security system.

Smoke detected.

The camera feed showed flames inside the kitchen.

Daniel called the fire department.

We watched firefighters enter the house we had purchased only two years earlier.

The fire spread too quickly to be accidental.

Investigators found gasoline near the back door.

Robert’s truck appeared on a traffic camera three blocks away.

He had burned our home.

Why?

Detective Shaw believed he wanted to destroy evidence.

Daniel kept family records inside a fireproof safe in his office.

The safe survived.

Inside were company contracts, birth certificates, and a hard drive containing backups.

The drive included emails between Daniel and his father.

Most appeared ordinary.

Then investigators found messages Daniel had deleted.

Robert asked him to approve a large transfer into Lauren’s company.

Daniel refused.

Robert replied:

Do not forget who gave you your career.

Another exchange discussed the trust in Emma’s name.

Daniel asked why my signature appeared.

Robert told him the paperwork was a tax strategy and instructed him not to involve me.

Daniel did not respond.

I looked at him.

“You knew there was a trust.”

“I knew Dad mentioned one.”

“You saw my forged signature.”

“I did not know it was forged.”

“You did not ask me.”

His silence confirmed it.

“You knew enough to question it.”

“I was afraid of accusing my father.”

“So you allowed him to use my name.”

“I thought it was harmless.”

I looked toward Emma sleeping with her new hat beside her pillow.

“Everything was harmless until it reached her.”

Daniel began crying.

“I failed both of you.”

“Yes.”

I did not comfort him.

Accountability should not require the injured person to soothe the person admitting harm.

Daniel moved into a separate hotel room.

We agreed to focus on Emma and the investigation.

Our marriage could wait.

The fire exposed another secret.

Firefighters found a tracking device beneath my car.

Robert had been following us since we left the hospital.

A second device remained active inside Emma’s backpack.

The same backpack where Lauren planted the bracelet.

I held the small black tracker inside an evidence bag.

Emma had carried it for months.

Robert knew her school route.

Her pediatrician.

The park we visited.

Every place I believed belonged only to us.

Police issued an emergency warning to airports, train stations, and border crossings.

Robert remained missing.

Then the security company found a remote connection to the tracker.

The signal originated inside the hospital.

Robert had returned for Lauren.

Officers rushed to her protected room.

The bed was empty.

A nurse lay unconscious near the service elevator.

Robert had taken his daughter.

On the pillow was a note addressed to Daniel.

Bring me the ledgers.

Come alone.

Or your sister disappears like Evelyn did.
