Chapter 5 - MARIANA’S HUSBAND LEFT A KEY

Mariana had seen the name Luca Ferretti before.

It appeared in a letter her husband David wrote three days before his death.

David Carter had worked in compliance for Bellweather Private Bank.

The bank managed accounts linked to Moretti construction companies.

Two years earlier, David found transfers hidden behind medical charities.

He told Mariana he was investigating tax fraud.

Then his car left an icy road and struck a bridge.

Police called it an accident.

Mariana never saw the original report.

Luca had sent flowers to the funeral.

At the time, she assumed the flowers came from the bank.

After the poisoned chocolates, Mariana opened a storage box she had not touched since David’s death.

Inside was his old key ring.

One key was made from black metal.

No lock in their apartment had ever matched it.

Ruiz examined the stamped number.

It belonged to a safe-deposit facility in Manhattan.

The box was registered under David’s middle name.

Mariana, Ruiz, and a federal agent opened it.

Inside were three ledgers and an encrypted drive.

A letter rested on top.

Mari,

If I do not come home, do not believe I chose work over you and Emma.

I found proof that the people controlling these accounts killed a child to change an inheritance.

I also found evidence connecting them to men inside law enforcement.

Do not give this to Moretti.

He may not have ordered Kiara’s death, but his empire made it possible.

Give it to someone who can create a public record.

Mariana read the letter twice.

David had known Kiara’s name.

He had known about Salvatore.

He had also distrusted Alejandro.

The ledgers showed that Salvatore, Luca, Bruno, and Rossi had created a private alliance called the Covenant.

They redirected Moretti money into legitimate corporations.

They funded politicians and police officials.

Kiara’s death allowed them to start a war and acquire rival territory.

Alejandro’s death would place every lawful Moretti asset beneath Salvatore.

David had attempted to report the scheme through the bank.

His supervisor contacted Luca.

David’s brakes failed two days later.

Mariana sat inside the vault room holding the letter against her chest.

“My husband died because he tried to warn a man he did not trust.”

Ruiz nodded.

“He still collected enough evidence to finish the warning.”

The files also implicated Alejandro.

Protection payments.

Illegal gambling.

Extortion.

Warehouse assaults.

He had not known about the Covenant, but he had led an organization that made secret violence ordinary.

Mariana brought the ledgers to Alejandro under federal supervision.

He read every page.

“You could destroy these,” she said.

“Yes.”

“You could say David lied.”

“Yes.”

“What will you do?”

Alejandro looked toward Emma’s drawing on the desk.

“Make copies.”

“For whom?”

“Federal prosecutors.”

Gabriel stared at him.

“That will destroy the family.”

Alejandro looked at his security chief.

“My daughter was murdered to preserve the family.”

“Emma was nearly murdered to preserve it again.”

“There is nothing left worth preserving.”

Gabriel lowered his eyes.

Alejandro turned toward Mariana.

“I will confess to what belongs to me.”

“You expect a deal.”

“I expect consequences.”

“Those are not the same.”

“No.”

“But one does not cancel the other.”

For the first time, Mariana believed he might tell the truth even when the truth did not make him heroic.

Then Gabriel’s phone rang.

Bruno had taken a prisoner.

The video arrived seconds later.

Mariana’s sister, Rosa, sat tied to a chair inside an abandoned church.

Bruno stood behind her.

May you like

“Bring David’s drive,” he said.

“Or Emma loses the last aunt she has.”
