Emma returned to preschool beneath her real name.
Mariana refused offers from television producers.
She refused book contracts.
She refused photographs of Emma beside the rebuilt estate.
“My daughter is not a public symbol,” she said.
“She is a child.”
The rabbit backpack remained part of evidence until the trials ended.
When Ruiz returned it, one ear had been torn.
A technician had removed David’s final memory card from the stuffing.
Mariana repaired the ear with pink thread.
Emma examined it.
“It looks different.”
“It survived something.”
“Like Mr. Moretti?”
“Yes.”
“Like us?”
“Yes.”
The allergy center placed emergency injectors in every room.
Teachers, guards, cooks, drivers, and cleaners received training.
Mariana joined the foundation’s financial oversight team.
She used the skills she abandoned after David’s death.
She traced restitution money.
She refused any structure allowing one donor or family to control the program.
David’s complete record remained sealed for Emma until she was older.
Mariana would not tell her only the heroic ending.
Her father had helped the Covenant before trying to expose it.
He had accepted money that came from harm.
He had also chosen to stop.
The full truth would hurt.
A false story would hurt longer.
Emma grew.
She no longer remembered every detail of the study.
She remembered the red wine.
The man’s blue lips.
The click.
She remembered being afraid that she would need her EpiPen after giving it away.
That fear mattered.
Adults repeatedly praised her for sacrificing her last dose.
Mariana corrected them.
“She made a brave decision.”
“That does not mean children should be taught to abandon their own safety.”
The center trained children to call emergency services, locate another injector, and find adults.
Emma’s story became a lesson in preparation rather than self-sacrifice.
