Chapter 14 - THE VISIT AFTER EIGHTEEN YEARS

Alejandro became eligible for supervised release after serving eighteen years.
Restitution requirements had been met.
His testimony had solved additional cases.
He left prison wearing a plain gray coat.
No armored car waited.
No men lowered their eyes.
He moved into a monitored apartment in Queens.
He worked with federal analysts locating hidden criminal assets.
Emma was twenty-two.
She chose to meet him at the allergy center.
Alejandro entered the former estate grounds through a public gate.
Children played where guards once checked weapons.
The marble study no longer existed.
A small exhibit marked its location.
Emma stood beside it wearing a white medical coat.
She was completing her pediatric emergency residency.
Alejandro stopped several feet away.
“You became a doctor.”
“A useful one.”
“I remember you could barely pronounce anaphylaxis.”
“I can pronounce it now.”
They sat beneath a cypress tree.
Alejandro looked older.
Smaller.
Human.
“Did you come because you felt you owed me?” he asked.
“No.”
“My mother made sure I never thought that.”
“Why did you come?”
“I wanted to see who you became after the camera stopped recording.”
Alejandro considered the question.
“I became someone who still has to decide every day.”
“Good.”
“Finished people are usually pretending.”
He smiled faintly.
Emma handed him a photograph.
It showed Kiara’s memorial inside the children’s garden.
No title described her as an heir.
The plaque read:
KIARA MORETTI.
A CHILD WHO LOVED YELLOW BOOTS AND DRAGONS.
Alejandro touched the photograph.
“Thank you.”
Emma looked toward the emergency-training room.
“People keep saying I saved an empire.”
“You did not.”
“I know.”
“You saved one dying man.”
“Everything else happened because people made choices afterward.”
May you like
“That is the version I prefer.”
“It is the true one.”
