CHAPTER 2: THE CHOICE THAT COULD BREAK HER

Rosa didn’t move for a full second.
The world narrowed down to three things only:
the baby in her arms…
Valeria’s calm eyes…
and the empty hallway behind her.
Santi’s tiny chest rose—barely.
Or maybe it didn’t.
Rosa’s throat tightened.
Her instincts screamed one thing: run.
Her fear screamed another: stay quiet.
But then she saw it.
Valeria wasn’t panicking.
She wasn’t even curious.
She was waiting.
Like she already knew how this would end.
Rosa slowly stood up.
Her legs trembled, but her grip on Santi tightened.
“I need to take him to a hospital,” Rosa said.
Valeria tilted her head slightly.
“No,” she replied calmly. “You need to remember your place.”
That word hit harder than a slap.
Place.
Rosa took one step back.
