Chapter 5: A Birthday Worth Celebrating

One year later...

The same August afternoon arrived.

The same date.

But not the same life.

This time the celebration took place in Ernesto's backyard.

No expensive decorations.

No forced smiles.

Just family.

Neighbors.

Friends.

Music.

Laughter.

When Ernesto carried out the birthday cake, everyone sang before the candles were lit.

Valeria closed her eyes.

Not to hide tears.

To make a wish.

Then she opened them and looked at her father.

"You saved me."

Ernesto gently shook his head.

"No."

"You found the courage to tell me the truth."

She hugged him tightly.

For the first time in years...

There were no bruises beneath her makeup.

No fear behind her smile.

No one watching her phone.

No one deciding where she could stand.

Only peace.

As the sun disappeared behind the rooftops of Guadalajara, Ernesto quietly looked toward the empty chair where Julián once believed he ruled the family.

Power built on fear had vanished.

Love built on courage remained.

And Valeria finally understood that birthdays were never about growing older.

Sometimes...

they were about getting your life back.
