Freedom felt unfamiliar.
The bruises disappeared long before the fear did.
Some mornings Valeria still woke expecting to ask permission before leaving the house.
Then she remembered.
No one controlled her anymore.
She returned to university and completed the psychology degree she had abandoned after marriage.
She began volunteering with survivors of domestic abuse.
She never introduced herself by telling her story.
Instead she listened.
Really listened.
One afternoon a frightened young woman whispered,
"I don't think anyone will believe me."
Valeria smiled gently.
"I used to think the same."
She handed the woman her business card.
Across the bottom were simple words.
