Chapter 18 - THE EXCHANGE

Jonathan Vale chose the location.

The old East River rail terminal.

Abandoned for almost twenty years.

Richard knew why.

Vale had used the terminal as a transfer point during the earliest years of the trafficking network.

It was where everything had started.

Vale wanted control of the ending too.

Mara opposed the exchange.

Richard ignored her.

“You don’t get to decide.”

Mara pointed at him.

“You are an escaped prisoner.”

“And you have not arrested me again because you need me.”

“That can change.”

“After Caleb is safe.”

Claire watched them.

Two enemies temporarily standing on the same side.

Ethan remained in an armored command van several blocks away.

He hated it.

Claire insisted.

This time he obeyed.

Laura prepared a duplicate chip.

The duplicate contained a tracking program and corrupted archive files.

If Vale inserted it into a system, it would transmit the location and lock the device.

Richard carried it.

Claire carried the real chip beneath her jacket.

Only Mara, Laura, Ethan, and Richard knew.

The terminal was enormous.

Broken windows lined the upper walls.

Old rail lines vanished into darkness.

Vale stood beneath a hanging clock.

Caleb and Sarah were beside him.

Both were alive.

Six armed men surrounded them.

Vale smiled when Richard entered.

“There you are.”

Richard walked forward.

“Let them go.”

Vale looked almost disappointed.

“Seventeen years and you still begin negotiations with demands.”

“I have the chip.”

Vale’s eyes shifted toward Richard’s hand.

“Show me.”

Richard raised the duplicate.

Sarah stared.

Caleb looked terrified but furious.

Vale smiled.

“Nathan Parker’s final insurance policy.”

Richard continued walking.

Claire and Mara watched through hidden cameras from separate positions.

Vale spoke.

“Do you know what your mistake was, Richard?”

“Too many to count.”

“You kept thinking you had a family.”

Richard stopped.

Vale gestured toward Caleb.

“This boy?”

“You abandoned him.”

“Claire?”

“You deceived her.”

“Ethan?”

“He hates you.”

“Nathan?”

“He died because you were weak.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

Vale smiled.

“You are alone.”

Richard looked at Caleb.

Then toward the darkness where he knew Claire was hiding.

“No.”

Vale raised an eyebrow.

“I’m finally not pretending otherwise.”

Richard tossed the chip onto the floor between them.

Vale’s smile disappeared.

“Pick it up.”

“No.”

One guard retrieved it.

Vale inserted it into a tablet.

The screen lit.

For three seconds, nothing happened.

Then LOCATION ACQUIRED appeared on Laura’s computer.

“We have it.”

Mara whispered into her radio.

“Hold.”

Vale tried to open the archive.

ERROR.

His face changed.

“What did you do?”

Richard smiled.

“Learned from Nathan.”

Vale raised his gun toward Caleb.

Richard immediately raised both hands.

“Wait.”

“You brought me garbage.”

“The encryption takes time.”

Vale fired at the floor beside Richard.

Caleb flinched.

“You think I’m stupid.”

“No.”

“That has always been your problem.”

Vale handed the tablet to a guard.

“Search him.”

They searched Richard.

No real chip.

Vale looked toward the darkness.

“Claire.”

Claire froze.

Vale smiled.

“I know you’re here.”

Mara whispered.

“Do not respond.”

Vale lifted the gun toward Sarah.

“I also know Richard would never trust himself with the real chip.”

Claire’s pulse hammered.

Vale continued.

“So you have ten seconds to step into the light.”

Sarah shouted.

“DON’T!”

Vale struck her.

Caleb lunged.

A guard restrained him.

Richard moved forward.

Vale pointed the weapon.

“Nine.”

Mara whispered.

“Claire, stay.”

“Eight.”

Richard shouted.

“She doesn’t have it.”

“Seven.”

Claire moved.

Mara grabbed her arm.

“No.”

“Six.”

Claire pulled away.

“Five.”

She stepped from behind the railcar.

“Stop.”

Vale smiled.

“There she is.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Claire walked forward.

“Let Sarah and Caleb go.”

“Chip first.”

Claire took it out.

Vale’s eyes brightened.

“Claire.”

Richard’s warning was quiet.

She ignored him.

Vale held out his hand.

“Bring it.”

Claire walked closer.

Mara’s teams waited in hidden positions.

They needed Vale to move away from Caleb.

He did.

Five steps.

Six.

Seven.

Claire stopped.

“Tell me why.”

Vale frowned.

“Why what?”

“Why Nathan?”

“He was inconvenient.”

“Sean Quinn?”

“Inconvenient.”

“Sarah?”

“Inconvenient.”

“Samuel Trent?”

“Inconvenient.”

“Peter Walsh?”

Vale smiled.

“You’re trying to get a confession.”

Claire smiled back.

“No.”

Vale’s expression changed.

“I already have one.”

She touched the button beneath her collar.

A microphone.

Vale laughed.

“You think saying the word inconvenient proves murder?”

“No.”

Claire looked toward Richard.

“He does.”

Richard removed a tiny recorder from his shirt.

Vale’s smile vanished.

Richard spoke.

“You gave me orders for fifteen years.”

“I saved copies.”

Vale stared.

“You wouldn’t.”

“I did.”

“Caleb was the only reason you had leverage.”

“Not anymore.”

Vale turned toward Caleb.

That was the mistake.

Mara shouted.

“NOW!”

Lights exploded on.

Federal agents stormed from every entrance.

Vale grabbed Claire.

Richard charged.

Vale fired.

Richard jerked.

Claire screamed.

Richard fell against Vale.

They crashed to the floor.

Agents rushed the guards.

Gunfire erupted.

Sarah pulled Caleb behind a concrete barrier.

Mara reached Vale.

“DROP IT!”

Vale shoved Richard aside.

Blood spread across Richard’s chest.

Vale grabbed Claire again.

Gun against her neck.

“Everyone back.”

Mara froze.

“Jonathan.”

“Back.”

Claire remained strangely calm.

Vale whispered near her ear.

“You have caused an enormous inconvenience.”

Claire almost laughed.

Then she looked at Ethan’s father’s old company key in her hand.

“You know what Nathan taught me?”

Vale tightened his grip.

“What?”

“Every journey leaves a trace.”

She dropped the chip.

Vale looked down instinctively.

Claire drove her heel into his foot.

Mara fired.

The bullet struck Vale’s shoulder.

He dropped the gun.

Agents tackled him.

Claire ran toward Richard.

He was on the floor.

Caleb reached him first.

“Dad.”

Richard opened his eyes.

For the first time, he saw his son calling him that.

Caleb pressed both hands over the wound.

“Stay awake.”

Richard tried to speak.

Blood touched his lips.

Sarah knelt beside them.

Richard stared at her.

“I’m sorry.”

Sarah’s eyes filled.

“I know.”

“No.”

“You don’t.”

“I know enough.”

Richard looked at Caleb.

“You shouldn’t forgive me.”

Caleb cried.

“Stop talking.”

“I need—”

“STOP TALKING.”

Medics rushed in.

Claire stood several feet away.

Richard looked at her.

Their eyes met.

There was no romantic reunion.

No sudden absolution.

Too much had happened.

Richard whispered.

“I heard the coffin.”

Claire stared.

“What?”

“At the funeral.”

“When Ethan knocked.”

Richard struggled for breath.

“I almost opened it myself.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Why didn’t you?”

“Vale’s man was in the room.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Richard continued.

“I chose the plan over you again.”

Claire looked at him.

“Yes.”

He nodded weakly.

“Yes.”

Medics lifted him onto a stretcher.

Caleb followed.

Sarah walked beside him.

Mara approached Claire.

“Vale is alive.”

Claire looked toward the senator.

Agents placed him in handcuffs.

For the first time in decades, Jonathan Vale was not surrounded by donors, staff, security, or cameras he controlled.

Only law enforcement.

Ethan ran into the terminal moments later despite orders to remain outside.

Claire pulled him into her arms.

“It’s over.”

Ethan looked at Vale.

“No.”

Claire frowned.

“What?”

Ethan pointed toward Vale.

The senator was smiling.

Mara saw it too.

She walked closer.

“What are you smiling about?”

Vale looked at her.

“Because Richard never told you what is on the last page.”

“What last page?”

Vale laughed.

“Nathan’s archive.”

Mara turned toward Claire.

Ethan looked at the real chip.

Vale continued.

“You think this was about money.”

“You think it was about contracts.”

“You think I built the system.”

His smile widened.

“I inherited it.”

Mara felt cold.

“From whom?”

Vale leaned closer.

“Ask Parker Meridian who owned it before Nathan’s father.”

Claire stared.

Arthur Parker.

Nathan and Richard’s father.

Vale whispered.

“Richard spent his entire life blaming the wrong man.”

Then agents dragged him away.

Ethan looked toward his mother.

“If Vale inherited it from Grandpa Parker…”

Claire finished the thought.

“Then Arthur Parker started it.”

May you like

And Nathan’s final archive might still contain one secret none of them had opened.
