Chapter 16 - THE VAULT BENEATH PARKER MERIDIAN

Parker Meridian headquarters had been abandoned for six years.
The company moved to a new technology campus after Nathan’s death.
The original building remained under trust ownership.
Richard believed that was intentional.
Nathan had never wanted it sold.
Mara coordinated the operation from an armored command vehicle.
Claire refused to remain behind.
So did Ethan.
Mara argued for ten minutes.
Claire did not change her mind.
“Vale is already chasing him.”
“Bringing him to the vault makes him a target.”
“He is already the target.”
“That does not mean we deliver him.”
Ethan interrupted.
“Dad gave me the code for a reason.”
Claire looked at him.
“You are twelve.”
“I know.”
“You should not be doing any of this.”
“I also shouldn’t have had to break you out of a coffin.”
Nobody had an answer.
Mara finally agreed on one condition.
Ethan would remain in the armored vehicle until the building was secured.
Laura came with them.
Malcolm remained under hospital guard.
Rebecca was in custody.
Sarah and Caleb were transferred to federal protection.
Daniel stayed behind as a backup contact.
Richard was missing.
Vale was missing.
The old Parker Meridian building rose from a deserted business park.
Windows reflected the gray afternoon sky.
No vehicles stood outside.
Mara’s teams entered.
Ten minutes passed.
Then fifteen.
“All clear.”
Claire exhaled.
They moved inside.
Dust covered the lobby.
A faded company logo remained on the wall.
Ethan stared.
His father had worked here.
He remembered visiting once as a child.
Nathan had carried him through the lobby on his shoulders.
“Do you remember?”
Claire asked.
“A little.”
They reached Nathan’s former office.
The furniture remained covered beneath white sheets.
Laura walked toward a bookshelf.
“According to Richard, the vault entrance is behind this wall.”
Mara inspected it.
“No keypad.”
Ethan looked around.
Then he saw something.
A small brass plaque beside Nathan’s desk.
PARKER MERIDIAN.
FOUNDED WITH THE BELIEF THAT EVERY JOURNEY LEAVES A TRACE.
Ethan touched the final word.
TRACE.
The plaque clicked.
The bookshelf moved.
Laura stared.
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
Behind it was a narrow staircase.
They descended.
The air smelled cold and metallic.
At the bottom stood a steel door.
A keyhole waited in the center.
Mara held the silver key.
She inserted it.
Nothing happened.
Ethan frowned.
“Turn it three times.”
“How do you know?”
“Dad liked threes.”
Mara turned it.
Three clicks.
A keypad illuminated.
“Code?”
Ethan entered the six digits Nathan had called his second birthday.
The door opened.
Inside was a small server room.
One cabinet remained active.
A green light blinked.
Claire stared.
“Seven years.”
Laura whispered.
“He kept it running seven years.”
Mara connected a forensic device.
Files began appearing.
Financial records.
Shipping records.
Messages.
Videos.
Scanned contracts.
Hundreds of thousands of documents.
Laura almost cried.
“This is everything.”
Mara looked at Claire.
“Nathan built a dead man’s switch without sending the information.”
“He needed the key.”
“And Ethan.”
Ethan stared at the screen.
His father had left a map of corruption waiting for the day someone finally reached it.
Then one folder appeared.
PERSONAL.
Claire froze.
A file carried her name.
She opened it.
Nathan appeared on video.
He looked exhausted.
“Claire.”
Her knees weakened.
“If you are watching this, something happened to me.”
Ethan moved closer.
Nathan continued.
“I’m sorry I did not tell you sooner.”
“I thought keeping you away from this would keep you safe.”
Claire laughed bitterly through tears.
Every man around her had believed secrecy was protection.
Nathan had made the same mistake.
“I discovered Richard’s connection to Senator Vale.”
“I discovered public contracts were being used for fraud, trafficking, and bribery.”
“I also learned Richard is my half brother.”
Claire looked at Ethan.
Nathan continued.
“He is angry.”
“He has reasons to be angry.”
“But anger does not excuse what he has done.”
“I still believe part of him wants out.”
“If he ever comes near you, do not trust his promises.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Nathan had warned her.
The warning had remained locked underground for seven years.
Nathan continued.
“The most important thing is Ethan.”
“He must never become a key people fight over.”
Claire cried quietly.
“I tried to build safeguards.”
“Maybe I built a cage instead.”
Ethan looked at the screen.
Nathan smiled sadly.
“Son, if you are old enough to understand this, I hope you know one thing.”
“You are not Parker Meridian.”
“You are not my money.”
“You are not my legacy.”
“You are my son.”
Ethan began crying.
Nathan looked into the camera.
“And if anyone ever tells you that your value comes from what I left behind, walk away from them.”
The video ended.
Nobody spoke for almost a minute.
Then Mara’s radio crackled.
“Movement outside.”
Everyone froze.
“How many?”
“Multiple vehicles.”
Mara looked at Laura.
“Vale?”
Laura checked the camera feed.
Six black SUVs entered the property.
Doors opened.
Armed men stepped out.
A seventh vehicle arrived.
A limousine.
Senator Jonathan Vale emerged.
Claire stared.
“He came himself.”
Laura nodded.
“He has to.”
“Why?”
“Because this server can end him.”
Mara radioed.
“Hold positions.”
“Federal units are twelve minutes away.”
Vale walked toward the building without fear.
He carried no visible weapon.
His men spread around the perimeter.
Then every light inside Parker Meridian went out.
The server continued running on backup power.
Ethan whispered.
“Again?”
Mara’s jaw tightened.
“Vale likes power failures.”
A loudspeaker activated somewhere upstairs.
Vale’s voice filled the building.
“Claire Parker.”
Claire stiffened.
“I am not here to hurt your son.”
Ethan whispered.
“Liar.”
Vale continued.
“I want something that never belonged to you.”
Laura looked at the server.
“He wants the archive.”
Vale spoke again.
“Richard Hale has manipulated all of you.”
“He murdered.”
“He stole.”
“He lied.”
Claire almost laughed at the irony.
“Give me the server and I will surrender myself peacefully.”
Mara shook her head.
“No.”
Claire raised her voice.
“We already copied it.”
Vale was silent.
Then he laughed.
“No, Claire.”
“You copied what Nathan wanted you to see.”
Claire looked at the files.
Vale continued.
“There is another partition.”
Laura’s face changed.
“What partition?”
Vale seemed to hear her through surveillance.
“The one Nathan created for people he did not trust.”
Mara searched the system.
Nothing.
Vale continued.
“I have the password.”
Claire frowned.
“If you already have it, why are you here?”
“Because Ethan has the key.”
Claire looked at the silver key.
Vale laughed again.
“You thought that key only opened the door?”
Ethan picked it up.
He examined the ridges.
Then saw a tiny seam down the center.
He twisted it.
The key separated into two pieces.
Inside was a miniature data chip.
Laura whispered.
“Oh my God.”
Vale’s voice came through.
“That chip contains the encryption certificate.”
“Without it, nobody opens Nathan’s final archive.”
Mara looked at Ethan.
“What is in the final archive?”
Vale answered from upstairs.
“The truth about Richard.”
Then a shot echoed.
Vale’s loudspeaker went silent.
Mara grabbed her radio.
“What happened?”
An officer answered.
“Someone fired at Vale.”
“Who?”
“No visual.”
Gunfire erupted outside.
Vale’s men scattered.
Mara pulled Claire and Ethan behind the server cabinets.
Then Richard’s voice came over Mara’s radio.
“I told you I knew where Vale was going.”
Mara stared.
“Richard.”
“I’m inside.”
Claire grabbed the radio.
“Where?”
“Between you and him.”
“You fired at Vale?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because seven years ago Nathan gave me one chance to choose my family.”
Richard’s voice broke.
“And I chose Vale.”
A heavy explosion shook the building.
Richard continued.
“I’m not making that mistake twice.”
May you like
Then his radio went dead.
