Chapter 17 - THE FINAL ARCHIVE

Smoke filled the stairwell.
Mara ordered Ethan and Claire to remain inside the vault.
Neither liked it.
Neither argued.
Laura stayed with them.
Mara went upstairs.
Gunfire moved across the second floor.
Richard had drawn Vale’s men away from the vault.
For the first time, Claire understood that he was intentionally putting himself between them and the people hunting Ethan.
It changed nothing about what he had done.
But it mattered.
Ethan stared at the data chip hidden inside the silver key.
“Should we open it?”
Laura looked toward the door.
“Mara said wait.”
“My dad didn’t leave it for Mara.”
Claire studied him.
“Ethan.”
“He left it for me.”
Claire wanted to say no.
Then she remembered Nathan’s video.
You are not my money.
You are not my legacy.
Maybe Nathan had not left the chip so Ethan could protect the company.
Maybe he had left it so Ethan could finally end the secret.
“Do it.”
Laura inserted the chip.
A hidden partition appeared.
One file.
RICHARD MERCER HALE.
Ethan opened it.
The folder contained videos.
Dozens.
Nathan had documented meetings with Richard.
The earliest was fifteen years old.
Richard looked younger.
Angrier.
But not yet cruel.
Nathan spoke off camera.
“You can come work with me.”
Richard laughed.
“You think I want charity?”
“It’s not charity.”
“It’s half yours.”
Richard looked stunned.
Nathan continued.
“Our father should have recognized you.”
“I can’t fix that.”
“But I can give you half my shares.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Richard had always claimed Nathan stole his inheritance.
Nathan had offered it back.
Richard’s response came slowly.
“I don’t want your pity.”
“It isn’t pity.”
“I want him to have wanted me.”
Nathan went silent.
The video ended.
Another began years later.
Richard looked more polished.
Vale was mentioned for the first time.
Nathan warned him.
“Jonathan Vale will destroy you.”
Richard answered.
“He respects me.”
“No.”
“He uses you.”
“Same thing everyone does.”
Nathan looked devastated.
Another video.
Richard cried.
It was startling.
He told Nathan about Sarah.
About the baby.
About Vale threatening them.
“I can’t get them out.”
Nathan answered.
“I’ll help you.”
“You can’t.”
“I can.”
“You have Claire.”
“You have Ethan.”
“I will not put them at risk.”
Nathan looked directly at his brother.
“Then stop working for Vale.”
Richard laughed through tears.
“You think people just stop?”
The video ended.
Ethan watched silently.
Claire felt sick with the realization that Nathan had tried to rescue Richard years before.
Another file opened.
The marina.
Nathan had secretly recorded the confrontation.
Richard shouted about the key.
Rebecca stood near the dock.
Then after Rebecca left, another person entered the frame.
Tom Sloan.
Richard stared at him.
“What are you doing here?”
Tom smiled.
“Vale wanted insurance.”
Richard looked toward Nathan’s boat.
“What did you do?”
“Improved your plan.”
Richard’s face changed.
“No.”
He ran toward the dock.
Tom grabbed him.
The video shook.
Nathan shouted.
Then the boat exploded in the distance.
Richard fell to his knees.
Claire stopped the video.
She could not breathe.
Ethan whispered.
“So Richard didn’t kill Dad.”
Claire shook her head.
“He helped create the situation.”
“But he didn’t know Tom would explode it.”
“No.”
“That matters.”
Claire looked at her son.
“It matters.”
“Doesn’t erase anything else.”
“No.”
Laura watched Claire carefully.
The next file was dated one month after Nathan’s death.
Richard sat alone in Nathan’s office.
He looked destroyed.
“I am going to fix this.”
He spoke toward Nathan’s hidden camera without knowing it existed.
“I swear I will.”
Claire stared.
Richard continued.
“I’ll take Vale down.”
“I’ll protect Claire.”
“I’ll protect Ethan.”
Then he paused.
“I’ll do what you couldn’t.”
The irony was unbearable.
Richard had entered Claire’s life telling himself he was protecting her.
Then manipulation became marriage.
Marriage became theft.
Fear became control.
And finally his attempt to “save” Claire ended with her waking inside a coffin.
Ethan opened the final file.
It was recent.
Three months earlier.
Richard was in Nathan’s old office.
He had discovered the camera.
He looked directly into it.
“Nathan.”
Claire leaned closer.
“If this archive still works, I know what you did.”
“You were smarter than me.”
“You always were.”
Richard looked exhausted.
“I tried to leave Vale.”
“He showed me Caleb walking into school.”
“So I stayed.”
“I tried to protect Claire.”
“She found the trust transfers.”
“I tried to stop stealing.”
“Vale threatened Ethan.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“I ran out of clean choices years ago.”
Claire whispered.
“There were always clean choices.”
Laura nodded.
Richard continued.
“I know what Claire will think when this ends.”
“She will think I never loved her.”
His voice cracked.
“She’ll be wrong.”
Claire looked away.
“I loved her badly.”
“I loved her selfishly.”
“I loved her while lying every day.”
“And when I realized Vale planned to kill her for real, I chose the most insane solution possible.”
Ethan looked at Claire.
Richard explained the coffin.
The false funeral was meant to convince Vale.
After the service, Richard planned to remove Claire before burial.
Malcolm was supposed to use a reversible sedative.
Richard had arranged a vehicle to transport Claire to Sarah.
The chemical evidence would travel with her.
Ethan would supposedly remain with Richard for seventy-two hours.
Then Richard planned to fake Ethan’s kidnapping and reunite him with Claire.
Claire stared in horror.
“You were going to make my son believe I was dead for three days.”
Laura whispered.
“He’s insane.”
Richard’s video continued.
“But Ethan ruined it.”
Ethan almost smiled.
“He heard Claire.”
“He did exactly what Nathan would have done.”
“He refused to obey me.”
Richard smiled faintly.
“Good.”
Then his expression changed.
“If you are watching this, Vale probably found the archive.”
“Claire, do not believe anything I say afterward.”
“Why?” Ethan whispered.
Richard answered as though he heard him.
“Because Vale has Caleb.”
Claire froze.
Laura gasped.
The video had been recorded three months earlier.
At that time, Vale had already threatened Caleb repeatedly.
Richard continued.
“He will use my son until I am dead.”
“And I will probably keep doing terrible things because I am a coward where Caleb is concerned.”
Richard leaned toward the camera.
“So if the day comes when you must choose between believing me and stopping me, stop me.”
The file ended.
Gunfire upstairs ceased.
Silence followed.
Then footsteps approached the vault.
Laura raised the pistol.
Claire stood in front of Ethan.
The steel door opened.
Richard entered.
Blood covered his shirt.
He was holding one hand against his side.
Ethan stared.
Richard looked at him.
Then at Claire.
“I’m sorry.”
Claire did not move.
“Where is Vale?”
“Upstairs.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Mara?”
“Alive.”
“Why are you here?”
Richard looked at the data chip.
“Because he wants that.”
Claire’s eyes hardened.
“He won’t get it.”
Richard nodded.
“I know.”
He held out his hand.
“Give it to me.”
Ethan shook his head.
“No.”
Richard looked at him.
“Ethan.”
“You told Dad to stop you.”
Richard froze.
“You watched the archive.”
“Yes.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Then he smiled sadly.
“Of course you did.”
Ethan held the chip tighter.
“Why should I give this to you?”
“You shouldn’t.”
“Then why ask?”
“Because Vale has Caleb.”
Laura stared.
“Caleb is under federal protection.”
Richard laughed weakly.
“So was Claire.”
The room went cold.
Claire grabbed the radio.
“Mara.”
No response.
Richard looked at her.
“Vale took Caleb twenty minutes ago.”
“How do you know?”
“He sent me a picture.”
Richard showed his phone.
Caleb sat bound inside a vehicle.
Beside him was Sarah.
Claire stared.
“They took both.”
Richard nodded.
“Vale wants the chip.”
“And if we give it to him?”
“He kills them anyway.”
Ethan looked at Richard.
“Then what do we do?”
Richard’s face became completely calm.
“We give him something he thinks is the chip.”
Laura understood.
“A copy.”
“No.”
Richard looked at the server.
May you like
“A trap.”
