CHAPTER 8: THE DAUGHTER WHO TURNED THE TRAP AROUND

The countdown continued.

38:54:20

The hidden room was filled with tension.

Every officer was moving.

Every computer screen was glowing.

Every second was disappearing.

But Evie stood completely still.

For six months, she had imagined this moment.

The moment she would face the people who tried to erase her.

She thought she would feel fear.

Anger.

Maybe even hatred.

But standing there, looking at her father, she felt something else.

Pity.

Because Daniel Harper had spent his entire life trying to control everything.

And now the one thing he could never control was standing in front of him.

His own daughter.

“Tell me something,” Evie said.

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

“Did you ever love me?”

The question surprised everyone.

Even Mason.

Daniel’s expression changed slightly.

For the first time, he looked less like a powerful businessman.

And more like a tired man.

“I did.”

Evie’s eyes filled with disappointment.

“No.”

Daniel swallowed.

“You don’t understand.”

“No,” she replied.

“I understand perfectly.”

She pointed toward the walls.

“You loved an idea of me.”

Silence.

“You loved the person you wanted me to become.”

Daniel looked away.

Evie continued.

“But you never saw me.”

The words hit harder than any accusation.

Mason watched quietly.

Because this was not just an investigation anymore.

This was a daughter confronting the person who betrayed her.

The officer at the computer turned around.

“Detective, we can redirect the upload.”

Mason looked over.

“To where?”

The officer hesitated.

“Every major news network. Government agencies. International investigators.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“No.”

Everyone noticed.

For the first time, he sounded afraid.

Mason looked at him.

“So there is something you don’t want them to see.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You have no idea what will happen if those files are released.”

Evie looked at him.

“People will finally know the truth.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You think truth fixes everything?”

His voice became intense.

“You think exposing this destroys only me?”

He pointed at the documents.

“This reaches thousands of powerful people.”

Mason stared.

“People who helped you.”

Daniel didn’t answer.

But his silence confirmed it.

The Harper Foundation wasn’t just one man’s crime.

It was an entire network.

Evie looked at the files again.

Names.

Families.

Victims.

People who never got a chance to speak.

Then she saw something.

A name repeated over and over.

Subject 001.

She picked up the file.

“Who is this?”

Nobody answered.

Daniel’s expression changed.

Vanessa looked terrified.

Evie looked between them.

“Who is Subject 001?”

Vanessa whispered:

“Your grandfather.”

The room went silent.

Evie opened the file.

Inside was an old photograph.

An elderly man standing beside a young Daniel.

Her grandfather.

But underneath the picture was something impossible.

STATUS: ACTIVE.

Evie looked up.

“My grandfather is alive?”

Daniel said nothing.

Mason immediately turned.

“Daniel.”

The businessman looked toward the hidden exit.

Too late.

Everyone saw it.

The fear.

The panic.

The realization that his biggest secret had been discovered.

“He’s coming,” Daniel whispered.

Evie frowned.

“Who?”

Daniel looked at her.

For the first time, he looked genuinely scared.

“Your grandfather.”

Suddenly, the lights went out.

The entire house went dark.

The officers raised their weapons.

Emergency lights turned on.

Red.

Flashing.

A security alarm echoed through the basement.

Then every screen changed.

The files disappeared.

The countdown stopped.

A new message appeared.

WELCOME BACK, EVELYN.

Evie froze.

Because that wasn’t Daniel’s voice.

It was older.

Calmer.

A voice she had never heard before.

But everyone else recognized it.

Vanessa whispered:

“No…”

Mason looked at her.

“Who is that?”

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

“The man who started everything.”

A speaker crackled.

Then the voice spoke again.

“Evie Harper.”

A pause.

“I have been waiting for you to return.”

Evie stared at the screen.

“Who are you?”

The answer came immediately.

“I am the reason your father became the man he is.”

The image appeared.

An elderly man sitting in a dark room.

A man everyone believed had been dead for years.

Evie couldn’t breathe.

Because she was looking at her grandfather.

Still alive.

Still watching.

Still in control.

The old man smiled.

“Welcome home, Evelyn.”

The screen went black.

And beneath the darkness, one final message appeared:
